Personal Narrative: My Social Justice Service
This past Summer, as part of my social justice service hour requirement, I volunteered as a big buddy at the Miracle League of Green Bay.The Miracle League is a program that allows children and teens with a disability to play baseball. A big buddy helps one of the players run the bases and hit the ball. Every week you play a different team but have the same buddy. As a big buddy it is also your job to communicate with the player and get to know more about them. My favorite part of this experience was getting to know my player. My player (name), was an eleven year old boy. When I first met him I thought it was going to be hard to relate or talk to him however, as the season went on I realized I was totally wrong. I asked him about what interested

To many in America, I am diversity. I represent a minority group, I am the exotic elephant in the room, and I am who companies include to up their diversity intake. My culture is the outline for my entire life; while it doesn't define me, it has changed and impacted my life is different ways. Diversity is the basis of all communities, and tolerance is a result of educating oneself on this topic. A group may be diverse in nature, but if not tolerant, they are not succeeding in being diverse in action. My life as an Indian-American student in a upper-middle class neighborhood may not seem to give much insight on diversity, but my experience has not been stereotypical. From an early age, my parents surrounded our family with Indians. It was not…

My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…

The chapters, ‘The Roots of Habits’ and ‘The Growth of Habits’ in Patsy Rodenburg’s book, truly opened my eyes to how our voice can be affected by our physical and emotional custom. Personally, it made me realise how I cannot take for granted the way in which I deliver my conversation in every day life and more importantly in my acting work. As an actress how I speak is vital, my job is to entertain an audience with the stories I tell, if I don’t have a voice people want to I will suffer greatly. Rodenburg’s word’s helped me grasp the difference between my natural and habitual way of speaking and how I can fix this.…

Originally, my interests in the field of social work were never clear. However, working in a school setting for the past five years have ended my doubts about becoming a school social worker. Additionally, my strong interests in this field led me to place an interview with a school worker where I was able to learn more about the profession at first hand. On this occasion, I was able to interview Abigail Loboda. Abigail is currently the social worker at Hall Elementary school in Aurora. She currently holds her Professional Educator’s license along with her Master and Bachelor’s in Social Work. During the interview I was able to gather fundamental information that I will share in this paper. Such information includes my personal experience visiting…

All my life I’ve been told that the world is wrong that there is so much injustice and inequality. But how do I know the world is wrong if I’ve never known it been right?... How do I know the sky blue not violet nor orange nor scarlet? I only know its blue because that is what I’ve be told. All us accept most what we have been told and we rarely questioning why? Why is the world wrong? why is there so much injustice and inequality? Why is sky blue? We have been brought up to accept the ideas of the majority but never fully understanding the truth. While we have differing views of right and wrong but my question can we right those wrongs or do those who suffer injustice and inequality just unlucky?…

When I was a child with a constant racing mind, one could imagine the thoughts that would have gone through my head throughout an average day, things like ‘why is the sky blue’, ‘how many hairs are there on a dog’, or ‘when’s the next new episode of Lizzie McGuire going to be on?’ You may not be surprised by an eight year old asking to her step father what he’d do with one million donuts. I answered my own question before he could even think and surprised him. He had been expecting me to want to eat them all, and I instead told him I’d love to feed all of the homeless in the world. Later that night he told my mom of what I said during that conversation, though she wasn’t surprised as I had grown up as a very aware child in Ottawa, a city with over six thousand homeless citizens. She believed that my exposure to cultures in school and my natural empathetic abilities helped me become the person I am now.…

Other early recollection I’ve had for of my passion for mental health and Social work has to be when I was about ten years old. At the time my best friend’s mom would babysit us at her job from time to time. During the summer time, my parents were working during the day, and most days they would leave me at my best friend’s house and her grandmother would take care of us. However, there were a few instances when her grandmother could not take care of us and my friend’s mom would have no choice other than to take us to her job. My best friends mom worked as a specialist of some sort in a mental health clinic. I remember seeing all the doctors helping the patients, but what stuck out to me the most was seeing therapy sessions. I remember my friend and I would try to sneak into them so we can listen in on their conversations and I’d be so amused to hear the types of things some people were going through and picturing myself one day helping people get through their struggles.…

Participating in this event with all of my peers allowed me to feel more connected with my community. I was able to take a break from the everyday routine of education in the classroom and apply the values I have learned to other individuals. I was assigned to work with a group of second graders with building a mission from a wide assortment of recyclables. Not being provided with ready materials, each individual of the group had his or her own idea on how to recreate each structure. Rather than allowing the disagreements to hinder our group’s achievements, I explained to the students how only teamwork will result in success. To solve their contrasting ideas, I guided the students through making compromises. With a plan of action established, we worked as a well-rounded team to efficiently complete our mission.…
