Personal Narrative: My Senior Project

In the county I grew up in, it was a high school requirement to submit a senior project. This project would include a portfolio that must contain parental consent of the project, a mentor agreement, a three page research essay about your topic, eight to thirteen pictures of you performing the topic and a hour log sheet that must have 20 hours of senior project work documented. This is not even including the eight to ten minute presentation portion of the project. I was hoping by the time I was a senior I would not have to go through all the hoops and levies of a senior project. One can hope, I guess. With outstanding resistance, I was forced to come up with a topic for my senior project. Originally, I was just going to job shadow, like everyone else was doing, a physical therapist for 20 hours. However, I started thinking… if I am being forced to do a bullshit assignment that could literally throw all my hard work in high school out the window, why don’t I make it beneficial for someone else. With that in mind, I started looking up local soup kitchens and things of that nature, but none of it really appealed to me. Then, one day while volunteering with my church’s Vacation Bible School, I overheard someone discussing a blanket round up for a local child abuse center. I kind of thought it was weird because one; isn’t eavesdropping in church
Not saying that I am the worst person and only think of myself, but when given this writing assignment, it was one that stood out the most in my memory. I guess the best part of this memory was that a couple weeks later I get a phone call from my project mentor after she had dropped the blankets off. She had called to tell me that they only had one blanket left in their stock room and they were thankful that we were able to help them in such a short notice.
