Personal Narrative: My Life Is Better Than Debt
As I grow older I realize more and more each day how scarce money really is. If one wants to acquire money effort is required and this effort is not always easy to muster when one is receiving an education. One of my hopes before graduating college was to avoid a reliance on federal and private loans. However, things do not always go as we hope so now I am in debt even before starting my life as an independent adult. There is nothing more saddening to me than debt because for most of my life my mom has been in debt in order to provide for me and my sisters. I hope that once I graduate from college I will get a good job that will allow me to pay my loans quickly and in full so that I can help my mom pay her loans and allow her to relax for the

The Recession of 2008 left multiple wounds in my family, especially after my father was fired from his job which he held for five years for being an immigrant. The “Great Recession” was not only a hideous word but a malicious truth in my household; it left us in a ditch hole. Getting deeper each day, the hole was in the way of my family’s future. There were nights when we were lucky to have enough beans and tortillas to fill our bellies; other nights, my stomach would gnaw with pain and hunger as I had given it to my younger siblings. My father was out on the streets, willing to take any work that was given to him, and my mother would pawn the values we held in much happier times. Its impact was that one of a tiny bullet skewering the heart…

My high school experience has leaded me to discover several academic strengths and interests, which now relate to my career choice for the future. My academic interest in financial literacy has made an impact on my academic strengths, which include: leadership, organization, communication, critical-thinking, and writing. Due to my interest in financial literacy, I want to pursue a career in business and real estate. This interest spiked during my junior year while I was recovering from knee surgery. After my procedure, I was expected to be absent from school for five days; however, due to a complication, I was forced to stay home for an unexpected, extended period of time. Before my surgery, I gathered all the homework that I anticipated missing.…

Is it sad that when it comes to writing a story all about me. Just one story, nothing comes to mind. This is what happens when you dedicate all your life to go to school and try to be the best you can be. Since I was a little girl all I ever did was think about going to school, getting good grades, and just making sure to be able to make your teachers happy. Especially your parents because if you did otherwise you would end up with a beating. When I got good grades it was mostly just so I would not get grounded. I always lived in a nutshell, I do not even remember if I had any friends. It is such a sad thing to me just to sit here and write. Every one else writes about how they went on a fishing trip or some intresting story. What is my story?…

Everyone who desires to go to college one day will eventually be facing the number one question that may or may not make the decision for them; do I have enough money to go? It seems to be the reason a lot of people finish high school and decide to just start working. “A job after high school helps set realistic expectations and firm up goals” (Johnson). Some kids, fill out the necessary paperwork, only to find out their parents make too much money and end up not going as well. Then there are the kids who decide to take out loans. “In many schools, 70 percent of the student body must borrow” (PRESS). Sure it seems easy at first, so they get another loan, they get another degree, only to find out that after college, the work force is smaller than they thought and now the debt is hanging over their heads. “Significantly, about 13 percent said their loans forced them to drop out of college -- leaving them perhaps worse off than if they never had gone” (PRESS). For some college students working to pay off their debts seems more important than getting the actual college degree. It is important to society that we try to fix this problem. The students applying for college need to be better educated on loans and have a better idea on the job market today, and what degree it will take to get them where they need to be so that they are employable.…

My whole life I have been a leader, the rule maker, the boss, a take charge and a "get stuff done" type of person. These qualities I attribute to being the oldest sibling, raised by a strong mother, and a stepfather determined to raise another man’s child as best he could. I thrive in situations where I can have control and can help guide a team or myself to the best possible outcome. I apply these characteristics to nearly every aspect of my life, sometimes to a fault. After dropping out of college eight years previously, to follow my dreams of being a makeup artist, I woke up one day and decided my life need a change. Not completing school had always weighed on me over the years like an unfinished task needing to be done. So, why now, what changed? My outlook on life shifted after meeting a special little boy named Jackson.…

The advice that was given to me about writing my personal statement is that whatever I wrote, it must be a statement that came directly from the heart. I’ve found that in order to do this, I must actually write about my heart. When I was born, doctors discovered that I had a ventricular septal defect. The defect needed to be repaired, or I would have been wheelchair-bound and not lived past my fifth birthday. The experience of my heart surgery was not only life-altering for me, but for my parents as well. I was their first-born child, and they had just purchased their first home. It is hard enough to learn the ropes of becoming a parent - but to be the parents to a very ill child was something they had never prepared for. They always…

Struggling, for nearly thirty years due to poor decision making I've decided to start this "go fund me" account. After leaving my home up north in Michigan, I chose to quit hanging out in the streets to come down to Alabama with the hope of doing good in life; that plan backfired. I've had two great kids but, they never had a great dad. My kids never had a place they could call their second home on weekends and summer months or holidays; I have always lived in rundown rentals. Though holding a job was never really a problem, I became stuck in a place of complacency, I stopped growing mentally it seemed. During these last thirty years, I've been married, divorced and been through far too many changes. Somehow, thankfully, I've never given into…
