Personal Narrative: My Life In Panama
Imagine starting a race twenty minutes after the other participant, this gives them a head start hence lowering your chances to vanquish your opponents in the race. This example applies to real-life issues like the people born in high and stable economic situations. Their probability to succeed in life is higher than those indigenous from third-world countries. Panama faces this problem and I have no doubt a change can be achieved and I can be the one who does it because everyone deserves the chance to succeed if they try hard. During last year, I had the chance to be elected as coach and teach a group of teenage boys, the fundamentals of soccer; what I did not realize was that this experience was going to change me completely.

I can still remember my first day as a coach as if it was yesterday, when I stood up in the middle of the field; I was surrounded by complete strangers. I did not know if they would accept me as there coach and if they will follow my commands but there was only one way to find out. I blew the whistle and told them to form a straight line at the end of the field. As soon as I finished my sentence every soul in front of me stood up and ran following my orders. I felt powerful knowing that these children will do

I have known people that had weaker soccer skills than some of these young boys and still got a scholarship in universities in the United States. These opportunities should be equal to everyone and not be based on the place you were born. I sat and talked with my professor about this and told him that I wanted to help these children fulfill their dreams and abandon poverty. He told me that these issues have always existed and there is no solution for these unless you have a good position in politics. I ended the conversation telling him that I was going to change that; these children will have the opportunities they

Growing up in Nicaragua, my family had never been one to have an abundance of money. At the age of 10, my mother had to wake up at the crack of dawn everyday to pick up the fallen fruits from trees, go into the city and try to sell them to tourists in hopes of making enough money so that she and her brothers could eat that day. She was forced to become the adult of the family when she should have been in school like the other kids her age. She was deprived of the one thing that meant everything to her, a chance at an education.…

Living back in the Dominican Republic I used to have a very easy life. Then I was living in my grandparents’ house in the suburb; where everything was very repeatedly: Wake up, eat, go to school, go back home, eat, do homework, play, eat once again and go back to sleep. Weekends were my favorites though; every Sunday we would go out for lunch, which usually I would be the one to pick, and as an usual seven-eight years old child my favorite thing back then was Pizza.…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

Coming from a country where poverty and less opportunity are the present every day I saw in a lot of kids and youths with talents and aspirations for their lives and their future, and these aspirations could disappear when time goes by and they can’t be reached. We in our country don’t have the support to develop our talents and came true our dreams or goals for our future. Tin shacks, worn shoes, and working in fields is the normality for a majority of Guatemalans. An estimated 75% of the country of Guatemala lives below the poverty line and upon first glance, one will not question this high statistic. In 2013 I traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip and have been back every summer since. Before my first trip I had been told that there was extreme poverty but my version of poverty at the time was a small house, beat up car, and maybe not showering every day. Little did I know that my version of poverty would sound like a luxury to most people I would come in contact with. Many days we spent our time in the villages. We built houses and stoves, played with the school kids, and more than anything we got a whole…

Throughout your middle school and high school career is when most people find out what their true identity and you go through events that really make a difference in your life. In the summer of 2017, my youth group decided to go on a missions trip to Peru. Going into the Peru trip, I didn't know what to expect but I was hoping to see change in myself. We went to an area in Lima, Peru called Jicamarca. I had seen pictures of JIcamarca and how run down it was, but I still felt like I had no idea what I was walking into. At first I was so nervous that people wouldn’t accept us into their little village but once we stopped at our first home we were immediately accepted. The people of Jicamarca are amazing. Each and every person I met was kind and…

Opportunities vary depending on race, gender and socio-economic background. Ermisch et al, cited in Davis (2006:34) note that, “education has become a key area of intervention in disadvantaged children’s lives, and low-income children are seen as particularly at risk of ‘failing’ at school”. Policies such as ‘Every Child Matters’ (ECM, 2008) are intended to…

It was on this hot, cloudy day when I met a boy named Bryan who was down in Jamaica for vacation just like me. We both had a lot of things in common and became friends real quick. After playing around the beach for a few hours we both got really bored, so we decided to go on a little adventure out at sea. He brought with him a blow up raft that three people can fit on that can float out in the ocean. So we started pumping air into the raft and then put it out to sea with both of us on it. We wanted to see how far we can make it out far away from the small little bay we were chilling at. While we were heading out into the middle of nowhere, bryan brought we him a little paddle that can move the raft a little bit faster. The water was now deep…

It is 5:30am on a rainy day on a reserve high up in the mountains of Costa Rica. I’m lying on the twin mattress of the top bunk that I’m sharing with another girl. We had gotten to the reserve two days ago and spent the day before digging a 2 metre deep septic tank for the local church and we were getting ready to go back and finish the bathroom the church has waited so long for. It’s hard grunt work and the rain and bugs don’t make it any easier, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Although I didn’t know it when I signed up, this missions trip would change my perspective on life forever. Originally, I decided to join the Costa Rica 2015 team as a good self-improvement experience and to see another part of the world; my reasons were very selfish. I knew that we would be helping people there and I was eager to do that, but it wasn’t my primary reason for going. The minute I met the pastors of the church with which we were collaborating, my whole mindset changed. I suddenly had this intense desire to make a lasting difference in someone’s life. Over the next ten days, I became invested in the work we were doing and the people we met. We served directly with a small church in Cartago, a city…

It enhances social cohesion, identity, citizenship, equality of chance, employment economic growth and social inclusion. Based on these reasons, equality must be enhanced. In the present-day America, very many disadvantaged children have continued to grow up lacking key skills required to excel in the 21st century. Inequality has continued to persist in educational achievement between racial and cultural groups or income groups or across geographical regions. Most importantly, low performance levels among these disadvantaged children have over the years been responsible for the long-term issues, especially in such an economy with higher levels of skills and a deteriorating wage offered to those people that are less-skilled.…

It was really to hear from you! I was living in Colombia last year and needed to leave the country to renew my visa, so I decided to spend a week in Panama City. The people were so nice and I wish I could of just stayed longer. Are you from Panamá? Are you living in Panama City? ¿Hablas español?…
