Personal Narrative: My Last Vaccination
How things can dramatically change in a matter of seconds never really struck me as something that would ever happen to me. It was January 10, 2017. I woke up at 4:55 a.m. To get ready for school. I remember feeling a little drowsy when I woke up. The night before was not much of a success in the sleep department. The reason was I was nervous because my mom told me she had scheduled an appointment for me to see the doctor because she was concerned about my nutrition and whether or not I was doing okay. In my mind it was just going to be a regular routine check, up, but, oh, was I wrong. My mom is not the strictest parent. She suggested I stay home that day and miss school since my appointment was at 10:20 a.m. But I insisted on going. I …show more content…
Zufer had left, the nurse from before came back into the room with two very scary looking needles. I felt a rush of worry. It felt like forever since I had gotten my last vaccination. The first one she injected was the flu shot in my left upper arm. The nurse told me to breath in and when I was breathing out, she jabbed the syringe into my arm. Ouch! It wasn’t as bad as I expected although my arm did feel a little sore. The next vaccination was one to prevent cervical cancer. As she was preparing to do the same thing as before, I asked if this one would hurt more. She replied with a soft smile and said that past patients said they felt a little pain but it would go away. She told me that I would need to get this vaccination three more times for it to be one hundred percent …show more content…
I looked up at the clock I had been there for three hours! My mom was clamed down now. Once they told me I was good to go, they also started to tell me that I was allergic to one of the vaccines or both at once, but that I would never again have to get that vaccination to prevent cervical cancer unless I wanted to have this fun experience again. I giggled and said,” no thank you.” Dr. Zufer and Dr. Maggie finished my check up and told me I could go

According to Barbara Loe Fisher, since 1990, around fourteen thousand reports of hospitalizations, injuries, and deaths following vaccination are made to the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting Systems (VAERS), but, it is estimated that the actual number of vaccine-related health problems occurring in the U.S. every year can be more than one million. (“Parents Should Be Allowed to Opt Out of Vaccinating Their Children”, 536.) Barbara Loe Fisher and Steven P. Shelov both wrote articles about the effects of immunizations on children and the community, taking opposite sides on the argument. Fisher argues against indiscriminate mass vaccinations, and parents should have the right to decide whether or not they want to vaccinate their children. However, Shelov believes that allowing parents to opt out of vaccinating their children would open the door to epidemics of several deadly childhood diseases such as polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and diphtheria. The biggest concern in the past decade is that whether or not vaccines in general are safe. Vaccines have been shown to cause lasting damage to children. For instance, Fisher argues that vaccinations can cause mental retardation, epilepsy, learning disorders, diabetes, autism and asthma in children. Vaccinations have gotten rid of polio, but have doubled cases of attention-deficit disorder. Fisher also states that parents should have the right to decide which vaccination their children receive. She said that the government sees the children as sacrifices to learn the effect out of vaccination. She argues that parents are the one that have to deal with the burden of what happens to the child and not the government. On the other hand, Shelov believes that vaccinations are safe and necessary. He said if you don’t vaccinate a child, it would increase the risk of catching dangerous diseases. Shelov also said there is no evidence linking vaccine to autism, SIDS, or asthma. He said that vaccinations…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

The misty September air froze against my skin; at least, it felt like it did. As we walked along the river, I debated the effectiveness of a faking an injury. Perhaps, then we would finally take a break. Although, It is far more likely we would continue to shuffle on, herded by orange traffic cones and dreary-eyed volunteers. Even now, years later, I still marvel at the fact the race starts at 8:00 AM. Whoever supplied the idea must not have recognized the pain it would cause my nine year-old self. Nevertheless, as we marched through downtown Portland, I felt a distinct similarity to the toy soldiers my brother had been so fond of. While we were disorganized and reckless, we walked quietly, with a common urgency. The comparison could also…

Life wasn't easy living as a serf in 1352, the plague epidemic was getting stronger, but we had cures and preventions-or so we thought. Every day I woke up with a heavy head and heart, knowing that my only way out was my inevitable death. I worked and lived on a small manor with my noble and some other serfs. Most of the day I would do some simple farming, but when other people died, I had more responsibility. The only good part is that I got more pay for this. We had our ways of keeping safe from the plague epidemic, but apparently, we weren't safe enough. Most people prayed, hoping God would keep them safe. Other ways that people would keep safe included eating emeralds, aromatherapy and other forms of medicine…

I used to love to go to my doctor’s appointments! I was fascinated by all of the scopes, thermometers, and scales. But, something about needles and injections bothered me and made me squirm. Vaccines, and just shots in general, were never my idea. I was always required by the state. And, I believe we should have the choice whether or not to be induced. For some people, vaccines are basically evading the rules of their whole lives! People want the authority to make choices for their own body and lives. The state should not require vaccines.…

Disease has been a constant source of death and hardship for the human race since their inception. Science, as a whole, has since then attempted to remedy the problem with its usage of vaccinations. The concept of a vaccination is the stimulation of one’s immune system in order to better protect itself against any sort of infectious disease. However, no matter the benefits of an application of induced immunity, people in modern times have called vaccinations into question over the amount of misinformation and the infringement on personal beliefs they represent especially when it comes to children. In the article, “Current Controversies in Childhood Vaccination”, written by Dr. Marisa Carillo-Marquez and Dr. Lisa White, vaccines are displayed…
