In the words of my grandma, my summer internship was “weird.” As a self-proclaimed homebody, I wanted to do something interesting this summer instead of the usual Netflix watching slug that I become. This realization started my hunt to find every unusual internship in New York City. Eventually, I sent an application for a farming internship and presented my charming self at a group interview. The rejection in my inbox reveals that my charm was only charming to me.
However, a week later, my initial confidence came to fruition and I was offered an alternative internship, called the Brooklyn Bee Corps. My heart leaped with excitement and surprise that I received an invite. Immediately, I obsessively researched the program and reread the invite a couple hundred times. My only

I put on my best smile and awkwardly greeted the four girls and one boy standing among the greenery. Then, I realized that one of the “teenage” girls was one of the instructors; she took charge of the group and continued to show us a variety of flowers and plants. During lunch, I started to relax and take in the miniature forest of mostly purple, green and yellow flowers just starting to fully bloom. My eyes wandered outside of the forest when the honking of noisy trucks charging through the city street became too obnoxious to ignore. The first day was a Wednesday, Native Plant Day. The second day was a Thursday, Beekeeping Day. I tried on the oversized white space suit, also known as a beekeeping suit. As the smallest of the interns, I looked the most ridiculous with the crotch of the suit hitting my knees. As I hobbled over to the beehives, I took my first glimpse at the swarm of honey bees in their busy homes. I bowed down to the Queen Bee with her yellow crown on her back and heard the loud buzz intensify as I raised a heavy frame of honey for the first

She reminded me that the world was really one big bee yard, and the same rules work fine in both places. Don’t be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. Still, don’t be an idiot; wear long sleeves and pants. Don’t swat. Don’t even think about swatting. If you feel angry, whistle. Anger agitates while whistling melts a bee’s temper. Act like you know what you’re doing, even if you don’t. Above all, send the bees love, every little thing wants to be loved.” August explains to Lily that bees have a secret life, and people fail to realize how difficult their life really is. Lily realizes how a bee and her are so much alike. When bees do not have a queen they cannot function. Like Lily who greatly misses her mother, little did she know you can introduce a new queen to the hive. Lily’s new ‘queens’ were the Boatright sisters and Rosaleen. She found people who could properly love her, the bees showed Lily how adjusting to a different environment can greatly impact her life for the better.…

When man first saw a flower he did not understand its presence. Then as flowers grew we understood not only its beauty, but other values such as scent and aroma. It was learned through an unconscious process. The Botany of Desire examines “connecting fundamental human desires for sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control with the plants that satisfy them – the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato – The Botany of Desire intends to show that we humans don 't stand outside the web of nature; we are very much a part of it” (PBS.Org). “I call this book The Botany of Desire because it is as much about the human desires that connect us to these plants as it is about the plants themselves”(Pollan,…

The scent of flowers carried strong over the valley. The overwhelming perfume of hundreds, if not thousands of untouched petals, was long lost to noses that grew up with roses in their nostrils, not able to pick out the aroma of a single stem. Not helping was the deepness of the valley, with the only way out a steep climb with materials they not only didn’t have, but had no hope of ever making.…

I can remember when I did my undergrad internship at a rehabilitation center; the Physical Therapist explained to me that if a person has ruptured their Achilles tendon, calf raises were one the best exercises. This exercise was potentially one of the best due to it strengthening the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. He also explained that many runners should focus on strengthening exercises, simply because of the wear and tear running they are more susceptible to this type of injury.…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

I have always been known as the kid with unending football knowledge. That, along with the fact that I had been hosting my own radio show for two years at the time, left me with great confidence going into my NFL Network internship. My first day on the job I was thrown into the fire. I was researching statistics and other stories to craft my own pieces to present to the rest of the office. At the end of the day, I had written four segments, all of which I was very proud of. I never imagined that all four would be rejected.…

Carefully, with a shaky hand, I successfully inserted an insulin pump into my left thigh. I counted every carbohydrate I ate and timidly calculated my carbohydrate/insulin ratio. The liquid I was distributing throughout my body was not in fact insulin, but saline. Volunteering as a diet aide at Camp Carefree, a children’s summer camp for type one diabetics, gave me the opportunity to know what it felt like to step into these innocent children’s shoes.…
