Personal Narrative: My Experience With Basketball
Basketball is a game I started very recently. In fact, I was hardly interested in it. The complexity of the game always made me feel like I’d never enjoy being a part of it. However, the game took me by surprise. A lot of my close friends were part of the team and they were so passionate about it. Very recently, in the beginning of 12th grade, my friends coerced me to attend practice. Waking up early morning and running to the gym was literally the worst part of my day.
Gradually, as I got regular with practice, the game intertwined with my life. I wanted to practice more, get better at it, put myself into the game and give back to the team who encouraged me to be a part of them.

About 5 months from when practice began, I went for my first

When I first arrived at Rotunda D I thought to myself great I get to stand the whole time because there is not one open seat. Dean Nickels started the event off by introducing Scott Naggy, head boys basketball coach. Naggy then talked a little about how they recruit players for South Dakota State University. He then introduced two of his players. The first was from the West side of Chicago, he talked about how he would play basketball to escape from the hardships of growing up in West Chicago. The second player was from Michigan, he explained how basketball was the main sport played in that area. He explained how the teachers there didn't care how the students do in there class they will just pass them to get rid of them. He…

It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. “Joe,” my father hollered up the stairs, “it’s for you. It’s Jackie, and she sounds upset.” As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was not happy. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice and quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Jackie.…

I was an eight year old kid when I had my first ever glimpse of the NBA Basketball. It was a lanky afro manchild doing a reverse dunk versus Indiana right in front of the Laker crowd. Crowd was in awe, Commentators were ecstatic and Kevin Harlan in his usual voice saying, Kobe can’t be denied. That day, my love affair with the Los Angeles Lakers started.…

On January 26th, I made a huge error in my basketball game against West Central. To anybody else, that game might have seemed unimportant- insignificant really. They were not a conference rival or a sectional team. To me however, this game was very significant because I used to attend that school. At that game, I played all of my friends from kindergarten to fifth grade. I hoped that I didn’t make a fool of myself. I hoped to do amazing so that all of my old friends would see what a great basketball player I had become. I hoped that I would make a play so amazing that everyone would remember it. While I would certainly not forget the play I made, it was not the spectacular one I had dreamed. My gym teacher- Mr. Prairie asked the class, “Who’s ready for the basketball game tonight against West Central,” and I wondered if I was. Because of my insistent worrying I could not manage to make a play through all of gym class (we were playing basketball)…

My heart won’t stop racing, I don’t know why and, My eyesight starting to fade away slowly like I had glaucoma. All the surrounding noise around me by the crowd had me going deaf, then I started to sweat from all the pressure around me like a morning workout. That’s the pressure I get every game I played that year of my freshmen year in my high school basketball games. I loved playing freshman basketball because the road trips we went to together. the thrill you get out of the games we played and lastly the team was like a family to me.…

I used to be an all season sport player, but now I am only going to be a ¾ season sport player. I played all the sports that I could, football, basketball, and baseball. Now I only do football, basketball, and track. I like baseball, I’m just not good at it. Fielding, throwing, and catching I can do, I just can’t hit, and I don’t want to be the one to get out when I have enough power to drill it out to center field, and then see the disappointment on my teammates faces.…

Currently, my endurance has improved since Late September, however it has not improved to the point that I wanted it to be before basketball. I have somewhat followed my goal of trying to run at the track, but I have been unable to run or workout 4-6 times a week. From where I was at on September 30th I have improved and compared to this time last year I am in much better shape than I was at the start of basketball season last year.…

Now I’m in college and I’ve been practicing and playing basketball. The NBA combine was coming and I was anxious about it. I went to all my classes and I get outside. The cold winter breeze hits me in the face as soon as I walk out. I make my way to the dorm. I get inside and the heated warm dorm felt so good. I got in my basketball clothes and get to the NBA combine. When I saw the competition I was relieved. We start the game and the jump ball goes to me. I drive down the court shoot a 3 and swish it. Afterwards I ended up destroying and dropping over 40 points. After that I was so tired and heated that the cold winter wind felt amazing. I finally got to my dorm and lied down on my bed. The soft sheets wrapped around my body felt so nice.…

The first time I scored in a basketball game was a life changing event for me. I was about to quit because I didn't think I would ever be good. My dad, he was my coach, told me not to because he saw potential in me. The first year I played basketball, I didn't score, so I wanted to quit. "Don't quit playing", my dad told me, "you can be a great player if you work hard." The first time I scored made me want to play more. It was my second season and I was the happiest kid in the world. My dad was in the sidelines clapping I loved scoring so much I never passed the ball a pretty much won the games by myself. Everyone else just stood under the goal and tried to get the rebound if I missed.…

Basketball is probably my favorite sport to be in. This is not because of the actual game as much as being part of a team so close, we were almost like brothers. I had originally joined basketball in 6th grade to make friends and have fun. That is what it was like during that grade. When 7th grade rolled along, the 7th and 8th grade is one team and we would go to each other's games, things started to get serious. We loved our coach, he pushed us hard to be good players but at the end of the day, we were like a big family. We were a Lutheran school but we were good. We had won a lot of state and national tournaments, in the private school division, in the past but we were not cocky about it. That year has been a particularly tough season. We had conflict and a few of our players, our friends, left. Our coach, Coach Ulrich had broken one of the discs in his back and can’t move around very well. Right before state, one of our best players, Greg, sprained his ankle and can not play as well and needs a lot of bench time. Our rival team played a dirty trick and ended up winning the very close semifinals in state. Nationals has been harder than normal, we lost to a good team right off the bat, who we might have been able to beat otherwise, and we were put into the ladder which is always harder. Here we are in the…

I remember the first day I met someone that played basketball, and was interested. I was in second grade, in Japan. I didn’t play any sports. I wasn’t athletic or tall. I had been thinking about playing a sport, but the decisions were between soccer and baseball. Then, one day my classmate, Yusuke Kudo, came up to me and said something shocking. “Do you want to play basketball?” he said. Basketball wasn’t a popular sport in Japan. I knew what “basketball” was but I didn’t know if I was interested in it. “I don’t know... I’ll think about it.” I replied.…
