Going to Southern California, no one would think of packing an umbrella. Why would they? California is in the middle of a drought. When someone thinks of California, they think of baby blue skies and palm trees along the streets. But, of course, the weekend my family decided to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld is the weekend Southern California experienced what the local news called a “tropical depression.”…

When I was seven years old and almost a half my parents told me that my family was going to pack up everything, leave our home, our livelihood, and move to Idaho. I was young but I knew I was going to miss Albuquerque. I was going to miss the plump quails who walked quickly with their babies toddling behind in a straight line and the skinny, all leg, roadrunners who would sprint across the roads. I was going to miss my little Crocodile Smile green room. I had chosen the paint color, I had watched my room be painted, and I had to leave it. Abandoning my home was hard too. The front of my seashell white house had two, big, high, arched windows. They had rusty yellow stains running down beneath them that made the house look like it was crying golden tears. Near the grand maroon oak front door were some slightly overgrown, prickly rose bushes. Everyday the roses blushed and smiled at me, turning their pink and yellow faces up. I was mortified to leave my crying house with the smiling roses. The day we left, I found out we were leaving. I had convinced myself that we weren’t going to leave, but then we did. I left my home, my friends, but mostly my memories. My memories included early morning balloon fiestas, during…

I wake up in the morning feeling great. My cheese is perfect and I eat a healthy breakfast containing a piece of bread and a slice of my newly made fresh lamb cheese. I pack my rv, feed my pet, fill-up with gas and head out on the open road. My vehicle’s engine is purring almost like a kitten and I’m pleased to read a highway sign that sets the speed limit to 80 mph for the next 290 miles. I plan that I can get to the end of texas and be on my way in New Mexico in 10 h 48 min (733.9 mi). About halfway through my journey I decide to stop for lunch. According to a street sign i'm on S broadway St, tx and I find a lovely restaurant called George’s where I buy a gyro sandwich for $5…

The first place I would pick to move to is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Everyone forgets about this part of Michigan, half of the time it isn’t on the weather maps on the news. I think it would still be hard because I would have to pick up my life and transfer it to another world. At this point I understand that I would have to give up the luxuries I love so much. I would keep my phone but I cannot take my entire bedroom, my car, or my school with me. I know a lot of my family would stay put. They would suffer through it because they wouldn’t believe it until it was actually happening. My mother’s side of the family is very old fashioned and will not leave their ground because they have already been here so long and have worked so hard.…

One day I came home from school and saw a moving truck in front of my home. The first thing I did was find my parents to ask them if we were moving. They both said yes, all of us are moving to Fresno California. I was afraid because I had lived in Modesto my entire life and was very comfortable here. I knew my way around Modesto and especially my school where I had many friends and knew the teachers well. Modesto, after all, is my hometown and now I'm transferring to a foreign place. When all of us arrived in Fresno we stayed there a couple of weeks and realized the house had a huge amount of issues such as with leaking water pipes, a broken heater and a variety of other problems. My dad said “Maybe we are not meant to live here”. Finally…

The place I grew up in could be considered above average. I had my friends that I would see every day and my family back at home. However, everything that any of us did would be over the top in every way possible. This became especially evident when my family and I would begin to plan a party or travel, this improvement of activities would be known as the “Mexican Way”. To be more specific, my family and I turned a normal New Year’s Eve party into a colorful and explosive fiesta. At first it seemed normal, we bought all the fireworks, started getting all the food ready for the party, and all my cousins and uncles started to arrive at my house; but as soon as it got dark everything started to get out of hand. As the first bottle rockets went…

Thinking back on it now, Alaska was an important part of my life, having lived there for the majority of the time I’ve been alive. The small town of Eagle River was a great place to live, even if it gets very cold in the winter. Since I’ve lived there for so long, I learned how to make my way around from Point A to Point B without much hassle and figured out how easily friends can come if you try. Where I lived in a neighborhood that wasn’t too far away from a safeway, so I could walk there and do some errands for my folks, and maybe do some shopping for myself as well. There was a park just across the way, which is where I spent most of my days if I wasn’t being a lazy nerd at my computer. If the summer wasn’t rainy, it…
