Personal Narrative: My Ability To Work As A Heavy Equipment Operator
My father works as a heavy equipment operator. His ability to work is dependent on things he has no control over, such as the number of construction projects available and the weather conditions. My family has no way to anticipate what his paycheck will be from week to week. This can make saving money rather challenging.
My mother would like to work to help supplement our income, but she has no college degree and suffers due to spinal cord damage acquired in a car accident in the mid 2000s. She's had numerous surgeries and treatments but finds no relief. Her condition makes it difficult and painful for her to sit or stand for extended periods of time, walk too far on an uneven surface, bend down, or lift more than fifteen or twenty pounds.

Until my most current job I'd been unable to secure a year-round position, but I have worked seasonally at Spirit Halloween and Barnes & Noble. I have never been fired or asked to resign. I have had at least one of my superiors at every position I've ever had tell me that I am genuinely enjoyable to work with. I rarely take time off or turn down the offer of an addition shift. I do my best to provide for my additional educational expenses because I know how lucky I am to have my parents pay my tuition. However, even this can be difficult. As thrilled as I am to have a year-round job, I don't get enough hours. Most weeks I work eight hours a week at minimum wage. The most hours I've had in one week is twelve hours. I love my job, and I hate to complain, but that's just not …show more content…
After I've completed my AA in Performing Arts, I will enroll in the American Sign Language Interpreter Training Program. I believe this is the best way to balance pursuing my dream of working as an actor and making sure I have practical marketable skills that I can use to pay my bills. While four years is longer than I had planned to spend at OCC, I'm happy to stay here. I have very positive feelings towards OCC. In fact, if the OCC ITP Sign Club hadn't exposed me to ASL, I may have never explored my interest in it and developed my passion for it. But those additional semesters also translate into additional costs for myself and my family. My parents are immensely supportive of me, and of my passions, my dreams, and my plans. I know that they will do everything they can to support me financially while I'm here. I just also know that our financial instability makes this difficult for them. Please assist me in lightening my parents burden as I continue my

My name is Julia and I am in my early twenties, and I would have never have imagined that I would one day be going back to school to earn my college degree. My mother and fiancé encouraged me to pursue it, because of my love of art and talking to people, marketing and public relations and that it would be very expensive since I wanted to go to college in America but could not afford it at the time. They were very supportive from the start; my fiancé assisting me in writing notes on flash cards and giving me pop quizzes and my mom reminding me to complete homework assignments when I was busy doing household chores. To me, my life was going great as I advanced further toward my future goals.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

One of the most significant challenges I face as an undocumented first generation college applicant is financial need. I am the first child of my family to be enrolling into a college this fall. Financially speaking my family is considered to be middle or lower-middle class. Although we make ends meet the strain of college tuition is an impending force that will soon become a large issue for my household. Likewise, the fact that I'm undocumented excludes me from many scholarships making paying for college all that more daunting. College tuition is not something that my parents have had to think about before. Yet, with the end of my high school career approaching and the start of my college career beginning it is apparent that my family will…

Growing up in a small, rural town you come to know people on a very personal level. You share in their joy, their sorrow, and their struggles. Watching people who played significant roles in my life suffer because they did not get the help the needed impacted my life greatly. Observing the roles of several different healthcare professionals, I quickly came to the realization that patients in rural areas do not always receive the support they need. It wasn’t until I observed an Occupational Therapist working with my grandmother after she had a stroke that my perspective changed. I reflected while watching the Occupational Therapist work with my grandmother about the importance of what I was observing, not only for my grandmother, but for the…

Honestly, I know little to nothing about the cost of college, but I have seen the toll of it from my parents. With my sister already in her junior year in a state university, they’ve told me time and time again to save water and electricity to reduce the costs of the bills. When I asked about it they listed to me all the different types of expenses they’ve had to pay for my sister: housing, tuition, food, and clothing. As a high school senior about to graduate and about to go to college, my parents had to pool their savings and what other money they have so that they can brace themselves to support me as well when I continue my education. Although it will be me in campus doing all the work, the cost itself to get me there is a heavy burden…

Now, I have two older sisters enrolled in college, luckily they receive financial aid, and my parents only contribute a small amount to their college expenses. However, I am a DACA recipient, now that the program has ended and it is inconclusive whether a new program will be created, I am uncertain if my parents or myself could pay for my tuition. Because of my DACA status, I think I have had to work twice as hard to prove that I am capable of success, and that I am in this country to pursue a prosperous future. I am dedicating my spare time into looking for scholarship opportunities and for a form of employment. I am determined to go to college, and I think my motivation and aspirations are greater than the invisible barriers that come from being undocumented. As a teenager with limited retrospective of just how pricely things are, I am just now realizing the trouble my parents have to go through in order to give us the many things we have today. I am grateful for my parents and the effort they make to raise me and my sisters, and I am glad my sisters have the experience of college because they are guiding me, and motivate me to be the best student I can…
