Personal Narrative: Literariani Venue
Humbled I feel so honored. When the committee said, “Maya you're going to receive the Literarian Award this year” I was shocked and humbled. Now that the 23 of November has arrived and I’m here in New York sitting in the Cipriani Venue, it’s only become even more surreal. On the outside of where the awards are being held a sign reads: The 2013 Literarian Awards. The inside of the venue is remarkable and grandiose with large, beautiful columns surrounding the room. The ceiling standing tall with a circular indent right in the center modeled after the Greek style. Black and orange all around the room, contrasting so well that they add a pop to the place. Even the crowd with their low murmurs and gestures create a wonderful atmosphere. As I sit here and …show more content…
That simple sentence makes laugh. My voice vibrates throughout the room. I can’t believe this woman keeps saying wonderful things about. And she does: “Maya is the most courageous person…” (Book TV: Maya Angelou). Toni’s words remind me that I can’t run away from my past. Even if it’s painful. While Toni continues speaking, I think back to the day that changed everything. While on my trip to visit my mother in St.Louis a horrible thing occurred. Her then boyfriend did an unspeakable thing to me (Angelou Biography). I didn’t know what to do, but I did know that I had to use the courage my grandmother had taught me. I spoke out about what he did to me at a trial (Angelou Biography). What happened afterwards was just as horrible. They killed the man and I blamed myself (Angelou Biography). Afterwards, I choose to never speak again. I couldn’t use my words because they had killed a man. I became mute. I stopped my thoughts. I couldn’t think about that time anymore. I looked back at the stage and heard Toni continuing to introduce me to the crowd and out of all the words she had spoken tonight these one’s were the one’s that resounded in my heart the

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

Rachel Stanton sat down on the piano with another female and Michelle Ellison stood directly in front of the piano wearing and elegant purple dress. I was unclear of what type of music that would be performed. Rachel Stanton began playing a very slow soft rhythm. Michelle began to sing in a warm very high pitched tone and this is when I realized that I was at an opera recital. Michelle was singing in what I believe to be Italian. She seemed very familiar with the language as if she studied it. This was completely new to me because I had never been to hear an opera singing before. As Rachel Stanton changed the tempo she played on the piano Michelle would begin to sing more aggressively as she was competing with the piano. The way she controlled her voice showed that she has put in a lot of work and practice into her singing. The way she switched from singing in a very high tone back to low very quickly show Michelle’s versatility and it was simply amazing. As she sung she had a very emotional expression on her face. She was very into the performance. Each song she sung had a different tempo and style but since I couldn’t understand the language she was singing in it all kind of ran…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…
