Personal Narrative: Iquitos, Peru
Iquitos, Peru. One of the most diverse places I have ever traveled too. With the Amazon rainforest surrounding the land, only being able to reach the city by plane or boat. One of the big things that I remember from the city is that almost all of the cars were motorcycles except for the taxis. That was a feature that made this place unlike no other.

“They didn't survive by eating each other;they survived by being resourceful” (schablitsky). In Miracle in the Andes they did eat the dead but they were also resourceful in many different ways just like “Aron Ralston 127 Hours” and “How A Man Survived 438 Days Stuck At Sea.” These three stories show how to survive while be resourceful.…

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas however, my parents immigrated from Mexico. My father made his journey from Sombrerete, Zacatecas and my mother made her’s from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato. My mother mostly worked by cleaning houses and my father stuck to cooking for either fast food or restaurants. They met working together at the restaurant my father currently works at called Fonda San Miguel. As my mother grew older and had multiple kids, the effects from working long hours took a toll on her and she decided it was best to not work. My family of two brothers and two sisters was living under a single income. My oldest sister was able to move out while I was still young as well as my older brother a couple of years after her. Growing up in Nicaragua, my family had never been one to have an abundance of money. At the age of 10, my mother had to wake up at the crack of dawn everyday to pick up the fallen fruits from trees, go into the city and try to sell them to tourists in hopes of making enough money so that she and her brothers could eat that day. She was forced to become the adult of the family when she should have been in school like the other kids her age. She was deprived of the one thing that meant everything to her, a chance at an education.…

In Chile, my aunt lives in Cerro Argentina, a hill above the ocean in Valparaiso. When the sirens signalling a tsunami ring, the people that live down below flee to the mountains and my aunt opens her doors to strangers as they watch their homes collapse with heavy water. If I believed in supernatural genes that carry qualities like once believed in the Renaissance, I would say that I carry the selfless of my family. I don’t mind giving up my time, items, or responsibilities in the name of helping others in serious need. There is nothing that makes me happier than knowing I helped someone who was feeling hopeless. My friends and family tend to recognize that I am on an endeavour to help my friends, acquaintances, and peers. I am the “papa corazon”…

If you knew me you would know that my culture forms part of who I am. I’ve grown in a Hispanic household and an important aspect of my life is my Guatemalan culture. Right before I would go to bed my parents would speak about Guatemala and its beauties. My dad's favorite memory was walking to school, listening to the silence surrounding him. What he loved the most about Guatemala was when Christmas came. On Christmas Day, women would dress in beautiful colorful clothes to dance to the rhythm of the music. When he remembers those memories it seems that he is transported back to that time and place. He always wished for that day to never end because those were the few days he could act as a normal child. After that he would go back to his normal…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

It was December 2010 and my family and I were planning to go on a trip to Mexico in December for Christmas break because me and my siblings were out of school. We were packed our clothes and ready to leave. We were waiting for my uncle to come to our house so we could go and get ready to leave. We left Houston around 8pm, and my uncle drove the Nissan Frontier truck and we went straight to 59 south towards Victoria. When we got Laredo around 12 am, we took a break at a corner store to put some gas in the car and buy something to eat, then we were ready to go. It was a long trip, I had needed to stretch my legs out. After we got our snacks, we left the corner store, and we headed straight to the border line. I…
