Personal Narrative: Guilty Or Innocent
Guilty or Innocent?

Today marks the momentous day that I defend a client on my own for the first time. The final outcome of this pivotal case is unknown, but I am thoroughly equipped to take on this challenge. Four years of undergrad school, three years of law school and three years as an associate has prepared me for my first criminal case as a leading attorney.

At 6:00am my alarm went off; I quickly dressed as I had carefully selected my outfit the night before, ate breakfast and was on the subway by 7:30am. I desperately searched for a place to sit on the jam-packed, reeking subway because I could not possibly review documents while standing up. After the fairly short and non-eventful subway ride, I met with my client briefly in a

While I always wanted to be a lawyer, the moment I read the book The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, I knew exactly what type of law I wanted to practice. I want to be a public defender. I am incredibly passionate about criminal justice and fighting for the rights of those who cannot fight for themselves. This summer I will have the opportunity to work with public defenders who specifically represent death row inmates in their appeals. I will have the incredibly unique opportunity to work with an office that has recently argued in front of both the Florida Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. Thus, not only will I get to work with clients who need immediate assistance, I’ll also get to work on cutting-edge issues. While I…

When I was 16 years old, something struck within me. As I sat in my public safety classroom, I was absorbed by all of the content that was coming towards me. The laws, the court cases, and the case studies piqued my interest. That moment, I realized that I have found my calling. Therefore, I have decided to pursue a profession as a Paralegal, based partly on my teacher, Don Hammond. Given my determined, technological, organizational skills the law career is the correct suit for me. I look forward to begin my life and profession as a paralegal.…

One of the greatest right’s we have in America is the right to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. It is ultimately the job of the prosecutor to prove to the people, the jury and to the court that the accused is in fact guilty of a crime. The accused either has his own or appointed attorney to present his various defenses to argue why he acted the way he did during the crime. According to Criminal Law Today, “A defense consists of evidence and arguments offered by a defendant and his or her attorneys to show why that person should not be held liable for a criminal charge” (Schmalleger 2010, pg. 114). This paper will discuss various forms of criminal defenses and how they are used in court.…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

Sitting in the living room floor watching Perry Mason as a young girl, I never wavered on what I was going to be when I grew up. From the age of about two years old it was crystal clear to me. I was going to go to one of the best law schools in the country and become a great criminal defense trial attorney. The road to becoming a criminal defense attorney is not an easy one. It is filled with tests, degrees, stress, reading, studying, tuition, and more. But for most people that choose this path, they are pursuing this achievement like an Olympic medalist trains for the gold. Achieving the dream is worth all of the blood, sweat and tears (Robert W. Davis, Jr. Attny, personal communication, February 5, 2013). In my discourse community as a future attorney, there are several important steps to follow that I will explain in my essay.…

To combat the prosecution of the wrongly accused, criminal defense lawyers must be diligent in holding prosecutors and police accountable for every stage of their investigation in every case they handle. Thus, defense lawyers must take seriously their role as advocates for the innocent and the not-so-innocent to assure that the guilty don't escape while the innocent are…

“The defendant is…not guilty,” said the judge. Yes, my plan actually worked. I can’t believe that Herb actually made everybody agree that I was innocent. I actually got away with killing my idiotic father. Oh I despised him so much, he would beat me and yell at me for no apparent reason. I remember that day like it was yesterday, I went to the drugstore and bought myself a switchblade knife. I was so irritated and I was ready to do anything to get rid of that old hag. I walked into the apartment and he was sitting down at the table. I snuck up behind him and stabbed him in the chest as hard and fast as I possibly could. He yelled then turned around and looked at me with a shocked look then fell on the ground. Right when he died, I felt devastated but also overjoyed because I wasn’t going to get abused anymore, however, I also lost my dad.…

When I first entered high school, I did not want to play any sports. Though, my friend, Brenda, talked me into trying out for the basketball team. I tried it, and as it turned out, I was pretty good. I played on the JV team as a freshman, and then quickly moved up to varsity. By the time I was a senior, I was the varsity team’s starting shooting guard, and I had already broken many school records. With all of this success, it was not a surprise when many division one and two colleges and universities contacted me about playing for their programs. I visited many schools, and finally decided to play at Michigan State. Due to NCAA rules, I was not allowed…

“Graduation, the hush-hush magic time of frills and gifts and congratulations and diplomas.” You weren’t lying when you said that Maya Angelou. May 19th, 2013 I had dreamt of that day for almost four years. I know I can’t be the only person who feel this way. I remember it as if it was just yesterday. So many different emotions going through my mind all at once. Happiness, Sadness, I felt relieved because it was almost over but at the same time I felt anxious and overly excited to just leave and go far away. 389 seniors were going to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. The harsh reality of life is that there's always going to be a form of control and manipulation is a big part of it. As human beings, we can be very egotistic and put our wants and needs before anything else. Our selfish desires gave us some insight on the tactics we used to compel others into helping us fulfill it. In the form of manipulation, it seems as life is a show, while some of us play the role of a puppet master. This would include pulling all the strings to put on a show and using people we encounter in order to achieve a goal to benefit ourselves. When it comes to manipulation, it is a powerful tool to influence the thoughts, feelings, and action of an individual.…

Everybody grows up whether they want to or not, but the pace that people grow up at is rather diverse. In today’s world, many educated people relate the act of growing up and losing self-innocence quite closely. In my case, I had a somewhat hasty childhood because I experienced the pains and sufferings of the real world at such a young age. Pre-school was a joyful time for most but others faced dark realizations.…
