Gabby has always felt like she was in the wrong body. She had always felt awkward and uncomfortable in her own skin. She knew she belonged in a boy’s body. Gabby has been into girls for has long as she can remember. She’d always dress like a boy, act like a boy, think like a boy, deep down inside she was a boy and wanted to become one since she was a little girl.

One day, she finally built the courage to talk to her mom about changing her gender and identification.
“Are you sure you really want to do this, sweetie?” Mom asked.
“I couldn’t be surer, mom” Gabby replied.

Gabby and her mother arranged a doctor’s appointment to discuss the transformation.
The day finally arrived and they were now sitting in the doctor’s office, patiently waiting for him to walk in. Gabby was incredibly excited and

There are complications and this is a huge change, you will never be able to go back to your original body. There is also a major fault… you will not be able to produce sperm… meaning you won’t be able to have your own kids.” Gabby doesn’t care about the complications. She wants this change.
“I understand and I would still like to go through with this,” Gabby replies.
“Alright, mom, are you okay with this decision?” Doctor asks Gabby’s mom.
“Whatever makes my baby happy” Mom replies, looking sad and unsure.

Gabby, now named Gabe, woke up in the surgery room. He is a little confused and out of it. The doctor comes in and explains that the surgery was a success. Gabe finally realized what was going on and started crying of joy. He examined his new boy body in the mirror and couldn’t believe it finally happened.
“Thank you so much Doctor!! I can feel comfortable and happy in my own skin!”
“You have to remember the complications and if you start to notice anything odd, come to the hospital immediately.” The doctor replies.

A few days go by and it is time for Gabe to go back to school. He starts overthinking and becoming very

Throughout our classroom experiences, we will discover that diversity comes in many shapes and sizes. When Kids Can’t Read by Kylene Beers states, “You might need to spend some time making sure students value their differences.” This unit is designed to focus on how we can build a more tolerant community and is built to help the students understand and celebrate diversity. Carol Jago, in With Rigor for All, states, “Students need books that mirror their own experience; books that reassure them they are not the only ones to have been bullied, not the first to lose a friend.” Luna by Julie Anne Peters is an important book for students to read and needs to be told, not just to help transgendered or questioning teens, but to help those in their lives who might not know how to deal with it, even more so to give insight to those who have never and may never encounter or experience anything like it. Sexuality is a huge part of going through puberty and in most cases, it is a difficult thing to deal with. Julie Anne Peters makes this clear by showing the transition of Liam into Luna. Many children struggle with who they are, not just in terms of sexuality, and this book and unit caters to the adolescents who struggle with identity. If the purpose of literature is to share a common existence and provide a broader worldview, then this unit will help us perform that act, but this unit might also help a struggling young person find a sense of self.…

Stevens reciprocated with a smile. “Oh, and ah… just one more thing before you leave, Seth,” he then said, and he appeared to begin peering around the small countertop the room had provided as if in search of something. After picking up the rest of his belongings, the doctor then spotted several pamphlets had set aside which had found their way mixed in with his the rest of his paperwork. Dr. Stevens then said hesitantly, “I know we’ve talked about this before. And, I’m sure you’re just going to throw these away as soon as you leave. But, I would not be doing my duty as your doctor if I didn’t at least try to give you these and urge you to start taking your health more seriously. After reading Allison Baker's " Better Be Ready ‘Bout Half Past Eight" it made me realize that discovering one's self is a situation our world is going through right now. In her short story one of Allison Baker's main characters, Zach tells his best friend of thirty-eight years that he is going to have a sex change. Zach tells Byron that he feels trapped in the wrong body and that he is going to become a woman. Byron is shocked about what he is hearing and can't seem to deal with the news. He's known Zach for some time now and he didn't pick up any of the signs about Zach's sexuality. Through the rest of the story you see Byron coping with the news. He talks to his baby boy about the situation and tells him that he will grow up to a man. He also starts to think about his own sexuality and even goes as far as applying makeup to his face. Byron watches the transformation of his best friend Zach into a woman named Zoe. As the story comes to an end Byron, his wife Emily, and their son Toby are at Zoe's shower. Byron squeezes Zoe's hand and I think, right then and there, he finally comes to terms with Zach's decision and is happy for his friend. As his friend walks away, he says that his son Toby Glass could grow up to be anything.…

I started to explain that I struggle with female relationships and have always felt more comfortable hanging with “the boys.” I recalled that most of my close relationships were with men and it was easier being friends with them. My mom then quietly asked if I was trying to come out to her or if I was a man. I was shocked and loudly exclaimed “no!” We both had a good laugh and I recall this moment fondly. I had a parent who was listening to what I had to say, and one who wanted to have an open conversation about my sexuality or even my gender preference.…

<br>To the doctor and hospital staff, it is crucial that the girl has the operation, in order to keep to keep her alive. The old-fashioned thinking can be understandable, but I think the grandmother was too stubborn and the mother was a bit unreasonable. They need the doctor's help, yet they refused to listen to him, even to the extent that the hospital had to keep the two women at bay. After the operation, instead of being anxious, the mother demanded, " Well?". This is so ungrateful on the mother's part. If you need the other party's help, you should at least be polite rather than rude.…

As early as the age of four (Vitale, 1996), some children begin to realize that the gender their body tells them they are, and the gender their mind tells them they are don't correspond. The sense of gender and the anatomical sex of a person mature at different times and different regions of the body (Vitale, 1997b). Sometimes the gendermap, the template within the mind of a person that codes for masculinity, femininity and androgyny doesn't coincide with the body of the individual (Vitale, 1997a). This condition is commonly referred to as Gender Identity Disorder (GID). GID is characterized by unrelenting confusion or discomfort of one's own gender.…
