Personal Narrative: Cross Country/Track And Field
Cross Country/Track and Field - I have been an student-athlete for the last three years at Bishop Sullivan. These sports opened me up to my athletic potential and have always been a part of me. Now in my junior year, I have been a captain for both teams where I get to help lead and share the experiences I have obtained in a sport I love.
Boy Scouts - I joined cub scouts back when I was in third grade. Now eight years later, I have gained knowledge, leadership skills, and once in a lifetime experiences that I will never forget. My last trip was a 15 day backpacking trip in Philmont where my group had to collaboratively work together to finish the trip. Now I am nearly an eagle scout and plan to finish the requirements this summer.

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

Through my high-school rowing career, it was my goal to win first place in at-least one competition, whether it be in a boat with four people, or a boat with eight people. Shortly after I was added to the team, I switched places with the stroke seat in my boat due to my determination and hard efforts. Stroke seat sets the rhythm for the rest of the rowers, and as I quickly improved to be the most powerful and technical rower in my quad boat, I was to be the metronome. That year, we won most of our competitions. For the following rowing seasons, I was set as stroke seat in many of the boats I had competed in. I continued to improve my technique and speed in the boat, and became one of the most reliable stroke seat members in my school's entire…

As a freshman and sophomore, I was a part of the track and field team at my school, Emerald High. I competed in many events, ranging from the 100m dash to the 4x800m relay. I have had many great achievements, like making it to the State Qualifier as a freshman, and competing at the South Carolina state championships in the 4x800m, placing fifth, as only a sophomore. However, along with the wins came great losses. A prominent part of my losses was a sprinter from my neighboring town’s track team. She was an amazing sprinter who was one of the best female runners on her team. We competed in similar events, two of those being the 200m and 400m. Anytime I ran the two events when we competed against her team she was always in my heat, usually in one of the lanes on either side of me.…

The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I first discovered what I’m really good at. I came across inspiring Youtube videos of old classic Roller Derby and recent ones that were published only a year ago, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on those quads that I had to try it. In less than two weeks I was a complete natural at skating, I was all about skates. I practiced all the derby stances, exercises, techniques you name it I am absolutely in love with this sport. but as much as I fantasized about doing it I never thought that I’d actually get the chance to be part of their world and have training by the Derby Dames Juniors Freshmeat Association crew, which are ranked the top thirty-one in the united states!…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

I have been running since I started Modified Track and Field in the seventh grade. Running has been a part of my life ever since then. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. Two days. Two days was how long the break between training for track, and training for cross country started. As a team our goal was to have the top 12 guys run 500 miles each, which at the time seemed to be an unreasonable goal. However Coach Hampton was confident that this was a reachable goal and encouraged not only the top 12 guys, but the the JV guys as well, to join in and train with the top 12.This was the summer of 2016, I had just had track state and made it to finals for the 4x8 only to get my relay disqualified because I cut into the inside lanes of the track before the cut off line. This had been our goal all season, make it to state, get to finals, and see what happens. Causing my relay to get disqualified is one my worst moments…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

Sports helped me realize a great passion of mine. In freshman year, I committed to two sports: golf and track. I started golf as the second worst player on the team, and I started track as one of the slowest freshman. I realized one thing: some things need work and effort. Through my toils in golf, I rose up to fourth best of the team and had my calloused toes and hands as proof. In second semester, I joined track. To catch up to the rest of the team I furiously trained, rising up to running in the lead in my division.…
