Personal Narrative: Cristopher Columbus
As I am rushing to follow the airport worker, the bright orange “unaccompanied minor” tag is swinging on my neck. Pretending to be Cristopher Columbus, I step on the American land for the first time in my life at the age of 11. Since that moment, I have discovered the United States through hearing the loud bursts of the Independence Day fireworks, through making campfire s’mores, through looking over the magnificent buildings of NYC from the top of the Empire State Building and through tasting a juicy home-cooked hamburger. The aforementioned experiences allowed me to meet new people of diverse backgrounds and to build meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. However, out of all the interesting stories I could tell, I want to focus …show more content…
On September 10th, 2015 I entered my new dorm room, exhausted after 2 days of traveling from Russia to the United States. Suddenly, I felt rejuvenated, when a girl with a shining smile on her face held the door and asked, “Do you want help?” As we were bringing my bags into the room, Renying told me she was from China. I did not hesitate to ask her to teach me how to count to 10 in Chinese. The next day I was already wishing my new roommate “good morning” in Chinese. Not only I aspired to learn everything about Renying’s background and language, but she also wanted to know the basic phrases in Russian and the traditions in my home. I felt proud when I showed my roommate where my hometown, Kursk, was located on the map, and when I taught her the Russian way of greeting, “Privet!”. The daily conversations about each other’s culture made me aware of the importance of appreciating the diversity of this world. I realized that the underestimation of someone’s patriotism may be hurtful and …show more content…

Christopher Columbus is the one who founded America. In 1492, thinking he had landed on the other side of Europe, Columbus had found a new land called America. This had happened because Christopher Columbus was trying to figure out a shorter route to get to the other side of Europe. This matters because, he was the explorer who found America. He had explored in the years of 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502.…

Christopher Columbus could be seen as both a hero and a villain. While Columbus had many good contributions to the New World, he also brought bad ones as well. In my opinion, Columbus did many more things to be seen as a villain rather and a hero. Columbus’s contributions to America are often mis viewed and a few great things he did cover up many horrible occurrences he was responsible for.…

Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

I wasn’t a big fan of the film 1492. The portrayal of Christopher Columbus in this film was very inaccurate as far as what he brought to the so-called "New World". The film displayed Columbus as the first person to locate America and to cross the Atlantic Ocean but as history shows others had accomplished this years before he did. In the film he could be looked at as both the villain and as a hero. He was obviously looked at as a hero to some because he is the one who was supposedly responsible of discovering America. Even though Christopher Columbus is thought to have discovered the New World, a lot of people considered him to be a villain because of the way he treated the indigenous people he met. He enslaved natives and demanded…

Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. His intensions were to go out and find gold and spices to bring back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in Spain.…

Should a man whose actions created a wave of genocide and killed thousands of innocent natives be considered a hero? Christopher Columbus found the Americas, but today he takes credit for discovering a new world. Native Americans had been living in civilizations across North and South America long before Columbus had "discovered" it. This journey has now ruined many of those cultivations as well as the citizens. With his expedition, he exposed countries to new disease and violence. His greed led him to deprive America of its natives and its resources. Thirdly, he also introduced Native Americans to slavery. These horrible monstrosities should be added to Columbus's reputation, which shows him to be a villain in American history. Christopher Columbus had evil intentions from the start of his voyage when he promised to repay Ferdinand, Spanish monarch and founder of Columbus's travels, with gold, spice, and other resources. When he first arrived in what he thought was Asia, he quickly gathered the natives and introduced them to slavery. What he did was wrong and he shouldn’t be celebrated.…

I agree with most of the ideas suggested by the author Drew Noble Alexander in his passage “Beyond borders: What it Means to be a Global Citizen”. However, I disagree with the author over some aspects. As a student from China, I had never actually communicated with any foreign individual till the age of twelve, and on the other hand, many of my friends have never done such up to this day of their life. Nevertheless, we are prepared to do so, and we process the skills to face any challenge we can face as global citizens.…

18 years ago, with just about everything we owned on our backs, my mother and I were walking down a narrow road in Gaithersburg, Maryland looking for where we would stay next. We were exhausted, famished, and probably more distinguishing, we were immigrants. On that hot day, at just four years old, I had no idea that moment would become a precursor to a long journey of overcoming significant educational, social, cultural, and economic disadvantages in the United States of America. As I watched hundreds of cars pass us by disregarding the sight of a mother and her child walking alone and lost, there were many things that I did not comprehend. However, what I did understand was that, the United States of America was different from my birth country…
