We’ve had a great start to summer here at Horsefeathers Roadhouse and Park here in Sherrills Ford, NC. This is just the start to a wonderful summer with our own smoked BBQ, southern style cooking and events.…
Welcome to Grant County... our little piece of heaven nestled in the mountains of West Virginia.…
Driving down the street we don’t always pay attention to signs, buildings, or street names. I do it every day. On my way to school and work there are dozens of businesses and signs that are just blurs in the corner of my eye. One business that I have always noticed was the furniture store, H3 Home + Decor, off of Harkrider Street. Every time I drive by I see the larger than life billboard on the side of the building. The billboard is a bright green living room set that attracts the eye of nearly everyone driving by.…
The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…
The first house my father built was constructed room by room and took more than 25 years to be built, a continuous work in progress. The original house was built in the standard square format without standard electricity and started with just four rooms: living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. The bathroom was located about 70 feet away in a little draw or valley from the house, which during the winter could be cold as the wind blew snow in during the most inopportune moments. New square rooms were attached to old square rooms as the house expanded outward to accommodate our growing family.…
When I was younger, my aunt always told me “nothing's better than than fresh produce and growing up on it!” Growing up in Bath County was really different than Fort Defiance. There wasn’t any Walmarts, Food Lions, or Martin's local, only stores they had were little convenience stores. Most people had to grow their own vegetables… and even have their own farm animals.…
A certain childhood place always takes me back whenever I flip through my family’s dusty photograph books, and that place is an apartment area in which my family used to live in Arlington, VA. Honestly, I do not understand why this place is the first place to attest in my mind as beautiful. I doubt anyone could consider an apartment beautiful. What is more, I know there were times I despised the place; particularly, since I was the baby in my family, everyone left the apartment for either school or work, and I felt lonely. Nevertheless, perhaps, Arlington, VA was beautiful because I made it so in my mind.…
“You should try cross country.” My mom said to me one day while I was in sixth grade. We had been talking about what I sports I should do during my seventh grade year of school.…
My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…
Our Hall Council hosted the Super Smash Bros tournament on November 3. I realized there was a resident that I’ve never seen before so I took the initiative to get to know him and learn more about him. We ended up talking for an hour about his major, his job, and I informed him about future programs. I also mentioned that the lobby was a great place to interact with residents. He seemed really interested about coming to the programs and I learned a lot about him. He even started to come downstairs a bit more after our first interaction. A week later, I saw him at Wal-Mart and invited him to eat brownies with RA Jordan, OA Edwin, and myself. Additionally, this was a great way to check up on him as well as introducing RA Jordan to him since this…
Shouts and laughter echo throughout the kitchen as my grandparents recount stories of growing up in Mexico as young adults. Everyone’s eyes light up with animation as family members contribute to the conversation while eating homemade tamales and menudo. At each of my family holiday gatherings, the dinner goes beyond the consumption of a home cooked meal. These family gatherings are very important to me and have contributed to who I am today.…
I come from a world where the only thing that is constant, is change. Changing states, changing houses, and changing schools. Unlike most other kids, I don't have a childhood home where I made countless memories, in fact, my earliest memories as a child all consist of cardboard moving boxes, along with unimaginably long car rides to foreign places. I don’t have a door marked to show how I've grown over the years, and I don't have a bedroom wall thick with paint covering over colors I chose as a child. Truthfully, often times when I was younger, and would see someone with these things, I was tempted to be envious and couldn't help but to think how lucky they were to have such stability. As a result of this, I spent a large portion of my childhood…
On the second day of school during my sophomore year, I realized how much Wahlert meant to me. It had become my home, the place where I felt like I belonged; school almost even seemed like a break from summer. Over the summer, I had become an empty shell and spent my time at the computer wasting the time away; the only interactions I had were with my family, and on rare occasion with my best friends, when we had sleepovers. To see the people I had missed over the summer was great. All of these things felt so true in that moment.…
This year in the beginning of August My family and I went to Springfield IL. for the Illinois State Fair. We were going to show our excellent show pigs. When we got there it was about 10:00 P.M, and it took us about thirty minute to set everything up and get the pigs in their pens.(compound sentence) When my family and I were heading home, we stopped at Casey’s. I got Prarie Farms chocolate milk and Chewy Sprees. The we began our hour ride home, and I was looking forward to the next day.(Compound sentence)…
It all began in the sixth grade when I was in Biology class with the white walls and all of the cabinets surrounding the students from the side and the back and the only thing to look it was the white board and the teacher sitting on her desk thinking about what to give us net as our assignment. As soon as she got I thought she was going to give us an easy assignment to complete in a day or two, but this time that was not the case she ended up giving us the longest homework of the year and it was our science fair project. The assignment took us about a month to complete because she took it in steps since it was the first time that anyone was going to do it.…
