Personal Narrative: Bay Area
May of 2008, I moved from a homogenous, developing suburban city of Vietnam to the demographically diverse and well developed Bay Area. It was a hard journey, having to uproot my entire existence to start a new life in a country I don’t even know anything about other than its involvement during the Vietnam War. My life was spun upside down to downside up because my parents thought this country would give my brother and me better futures.

My first few years living in the Bay Area change who I am completely. This is where I experienced for the first time an influx of different ideas, perspectives, and beliefs. I learned to become more tolerated and respect other’s identities and ideas. In my old country, almost everyone all has similar ways

The city that I come from is not a representation of who I am. Pomona, California is known for it’s high crime rights, and all around gang violence. It is troublesome not to fall through the cracks when the temptation is all around my community. Growing accustom to this environment makes it that much easier to fall a victim into this lifestyle. At the age of 15, for the first time in my life, I experienced a retaliation drive by up the street from where I sleep, the place I call home. That night I heard a total of five gunshots, and was later informed the gun shots left two family friends paralyzed. One is now paralyzed from the neck down, and the other from the waist down. The two victims were sisters, and were not the main target. The shots…

Having lived in a variety of countries, I have developed a level of interest and compassion for various communities and environments. I often felt like an outsider when my family and I would initially move to a new city. The unique experience of being able to look into a community or society from the outside allowed myself to not only appreciate but also analyze my surroundings. Growing up in South Korea, California and Louisiana, due to my father’s work, allowed me to appreciate different cultures while developing an awareness for the greater, overarching society of the world. I was able to be a part of the individual culture of each distinct community while developing an appreciation for the way in which all communities are connected.…

When I first came into this country at the age of 7, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I transitioned from having stereotypical Asians that surrounded me to complete strangers, ABCs(American Born Chinese) who follow the cultural norms of whites. I expected to find relief in my fellow Asians but I soon came to realize that the only thing we had in common was our physical attributes. In order to fit in I had to adapt by changing the very foundation of my identity, from the language I speak and the clothes I wear to how I interact with others. These might not sound like dramatic life changing transitions, but they altered the very basis of my identity, from a cliche asian, to a traditional ABC. Although you could define me as an FOB for bieng born in china, Majoity of my traits are that of an ABC.My lifestyle, my personal experience, and my way of interaction with friends are very similar if not the same to most of my friends, all of who are…

Having close to no big change in my life, moving to Seattle can't be any more exciting for me. Being born and raised in North Carolina, I've always been curious about living in a new area of the country. Ever since I visited San Francisco in sixth grade, I've been in love with the west coast. It has nothing to to do with Hollywood, celebrities, or fame. I love the vibe of the west coast. I love how liberal and progressive Washington is. The beaches and weather in California are amazing. The mountains in Oregon and Washington are to die for. While North Carolina is not only where I was born and raised, but it offers beauty and a unique culture. I love it, but I'm ready to try new things. My whole life I've lived in the same house, woken up in…

Throughout my life I have been in and out of different communities, both online and face to face, but there is only one that I’ve ever stuck to. At the age of two, my parents brought me from Mexico to the States, starting my journey of living my life being Mexican-American. This community isn’t only for those who were born and raised here with Mexican parents, but also for those of us who were also born in Mexico, yet have lived here for most of their lives. Geography and identity aren’t the only things that the people in the community have in common, but also that we had to learn how to live with two different cultures. Although I do consider us a pretty strong community, it isn’t that strong because there’s no leader and not everyone knows…

At around 12:30 pm, on Sunday, February 12th 2017, I drove to the Santa Monica Pier from my house in Sherman oaks. I am wearing a black top, dark blue jeans, and a warm grey coat, and am slightly to hot. When I arrive at the parking station, I notice that the beach is already very crowded and there is hardly any parking available, this makes me nervous, because I am not good at parking on a good day, after a good 15 minutes of circling the parking lot, I spotted two people who may have been going towards their car, one person had short blond hair and was wearing orange and blue striped swimming trunks, without any shoes or a shirt, and was carrying a large icebox, while the other was wearing a long floral dress and black flip flops. I rolled down…

New York City, nothing can be more exciting to me. For those around the world that venture to this concrete jungle, they travel here to capture the gift from France, to pay their respects to Ground Zero, to discuss business on Wall Street, or even to visit King Kong’s territory. For me, going to New York was my last act of rebellion against the watchful eye of my conservative Filipino parents. I sought to express my individuality and experience one last episode before my summer of bliss ceased upon entering a rigorous senior year of high school.…

To say that I have discovered myself would be cliché and a terrible understatement. The Californian lifestyle is often stereotyped as laidback and carefree but I never realized the merit of this stereotype until I experienced life in Hong Kong. The hustle on the crowded streets of Hong Kong is nauseating compared to even the busiest areas of Los Angeles or San Francisco. As a product of the competitiveness of getting into college, the students of HKUST are insanely driven and literally, the best of Hong Kong and China. The fast paced lifestyle and difficult competition adds crushing…
