Personal Narrative: A Day In El Salvador
90 degrees and 90 percent humidity, clothes stick to you. Sweat marks are visible on a new hat within 15 minutes of wearing it outside. This is El Salvador in July. Yet there I was sitting shivering. It started on a normal day on my mission’s trip. Waking up at sun rise. Going to the fresh morning air, getting the best cup of coffee I have ever had. All I put in the coffee was some milk. I read the Bible and fill out my daily devotions and as I do that I watch the most beautiful sunrise with pinks and yellows and purples with white clouds. The sun is climbing out of the jungle in the far distance with a tall new building off to the right. Once the sun is out and pounding on me. I meet the team for breakfast. Eating greasy bacon and more coffee. …show more content…
But then my girlfriend and I were sitting with our feet in the pool ankle deep. We were talking about our parent’s divorce. At the time it was just over a year that my parents got divorced so it was fresh like a cut. Hard to even think about, yet there I was talking about it. It started to rain lightly. So we moved to the steps outside the restaurant where we wouldn’t get hit by the rain. The restaurant was still open so I got the best coffee I have ever had. Slowly drinking it as if it was my …show more content…
“You know what I mean?” My girlfriend slowly shook her head yes. “Mine was September 25th 2013. It was a great day I had student council after that I had biology where we were doing an experiment to see what colors and pens termites would follow. I had biology right before lunch. Mr. Faulkner got a call saying I was going too get checked out. I thought that I was going out to lunch. My dad was there. It was unusual but I still was excited because I was leaving. The drive was silent and awkward. You could brush the awkwardness from your face. I remember thinking someone died. We picked up my sister then went home.” I remember hearing the words “your mom and I are getting a divorce” my father said. It hit me like a gun shot. My girlfriend was nodding along the whole time. This was the first time I truly talked about it with anyone. My coffee was gone and the rain was steadier. There I was shivering in the hottest place I have been. The humidity did not help it not only was it freezing but your clothes grew cold as they stuck to you. You could hide from the rain but it made the humidity cold and there was no place to hide from the humidity. I was shivering as my girlfriend shared her story. It was eye opening to me. Even though I knew I was not the only one whose parents are divorced but listening to another divorce story a reality. It was like it the world was lifted off my shoulders.
After I long silence

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

Last Summer, I visited Costa Rica on a kayaking trip with Falling Creek, a summer camp in Tuxedo, NC. Every year, 20 or so kids get invited to the program called HUCK, where you go kayaking in places around the world. Last summer, all of the kids that were invited went to Costa Rica where we would have a great time experiencing new culture and great whitewater. The First few days were great and those were some of the most powerful, best rivers I have ever kayaked.…

The line sounded rehearsed, as if he had spoken these words multiple times a day for many years. His glossy brown eyes penetrated my startled blue ones for as long as I let them until I turned away. His dirtied innocent face was one that came straight out of a UNICEF commercial, the sort that caught you off guard during a commercial break of your favorite TV show. Wistful faces of impoverished children flick before your eyes as a concerned voice insists that if you donate your unused pocket change every month, you could support the life of this poor boy.…

The place I grew up in could be considered above average. I had my friends that I would see every day and my family back at home. However, everything that any of us did would be over the top in every way possible. This became especially evident when my family and I would begin to plan a party or travel, this improvement of activities would be known as the “Mexican Way”. To be more specific, my family and I turned a normal New Year’s Eve party into a colorful and explosive fiesta. At first it seemed normal, we bought all the fireworks, started getting all the food ready for the party, and all my cousins and uncles started to arrive at my house; but as soon as it got dark everything started to get out of hand. As the first bottle rockets went…

So, as I said it was the middle of my senior year. I was out with my best friends, Elana, her little sister Alyssa, and Nicole. We were all out, enjoying our day out, with the sun in our hair, the nice breeze flowing through our hair, and the loud hip hop music blasting some Taylor Swift track. We got to Elana’s house and decide to swim in her pool and relax on this nice day during the week. It was a very nostalgic day, despite what happens later that night. After the pool, we sit in Elana’s room and talk about life and the boys we are currently talking to. We then decide to watch a movie and order pizza. It was perfect. The atmosphere of being with my closest friends was the best feeling of my life. As we talked and giggled, danced, sang and watched movies together we just lived life just cause we can.…

It was a beautiful, sunny day out, and I woke up only to figure out I had to clean. My chores were assigned and I got stuck with the bathroom, mopping, and dishes. Our cousins whom I adore were coming to visit us from Arkansas. Although I didn’t know it at the time. We see them once a year at Thanksgiving, so this was a big deal. Our parents told us some of our friends from where we use to live were coming to visit us. I finished my bedroom which only needed to be tidied up a little, and I sat in my room for 3 and a half hours reading. I finished reading Anne of Ingleside that was in a wonderful series called Anne of Green Gables. A car started pulling up our half a mile driveway, and I ran down to meet them. It was our cousins. It was a surprise had absolutely, so we had no idea when they were going arrive. They would have had to leave at 3 in the morning by the time they got…

I never been out the country before and having the opportunity to go Costa Rica was the most exciting experience ever. I was nervous at first about going because I had some distracting effects affecting me but, once I refocused on my future I was really eager about going I felt I needed the break. I was really looking forward to eating great meals, learning all that I can, and sightseeing. We did plenty of sightseeing every city we visited even if it was only for a few hours there was something to see and be amazed by. The simplest things I saw was amazing from flowers, insects, buildings, the ticos (Costa Ricans), and even the roads. One thing that really stood out to me was in Costa Rica was that they had so many friendly straw perros (dogs).…

I come from the richest country in the world, yet also one of the poorest. While Venezuela has the largest reserve of petroleum in the world, besides uranium, gold, coltan, and anything you can ask for, there is hunger, illness, and poverty. If disgrace was awarded, we would win in so many fields: highest inflation, most dangerous cities, corruption, and even 2nd year as the country with the most misery, according to John Hopkins University.…

It was in a sixth grade classroom with about twenty strangers, where I learned my best friend would not return to school. The sun glaring through the window nearly blinded me as I turned away from the class to hide my tears. Facing away from the quiet room, I still knew everyone’s eyes were fixed on the teacher as they waited on her to say something else. After sitting in silence for what seemed like forever, the class turned their attention to the school guidance counselor frantically rushing into the room. I kept my position toward the window until she hurried over to my desk and told me my parents were there to check me out of school.…
