Personal Narrative: A Career As An Athlete
We all have our own problems to deal with. Some bigger than others, but luckily for me all my problems have been small but one. My senior year in high-school I decided to wrestle. Being an athlete of many sports; I knew what risk I was putting my body in. one day at practice we were working on drills, and I caught an elbow to the upper portion of my eyelid. It split open and immediately, and a surge of blood ran down my face. I had more anger about the situation than I did pain. Once I was able to calm down and recoup with myself; I went to the trainer and he got me all patched up. I could have handled the issue better than I did, but it’s hard to control your emotions in the heat of the moment. I should have stayed calm and channeled my anger

I was out on the rink speed skating in Arnold, Mo. That day had been perfect, I got a job, got an A+ on my final exam, and now I was skating. Everything at the rink was just fine till they closed the child rink and turned it into something that would make more money. I was speed skating when I came around the corner and instantly was greeted by a child falling in front of me. With no time to think I jumped, and when I landed, I landed hard on my skates stomping trying to regain my balance, bending my axle. Basically breaking my right skate, when I finally regained my balance I exited the floor mad and in a moment of rage.…

It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. “Joe,” my father hollered up the stairs, “it’s for you. It’s Jackie, and she sounds upset.” As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was not happy. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice and quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Jackie.…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

In baseball there is an enigma of a pitch called the knuckle ball, which is very difficult for batters to hit because the the ball moves unpredictably in different directions. Often time it feels like life is like trying to hit a home-run off a knuckle ball. When this happens, When life throws us something unexpected we must learn to adapt and respond appropriately.. I learned this when first entering choir as a sophomore with the firm notion that being a bold and strong leader was always the best way to be. Life was about to pitch me a crazy surprise.…

physically gifted they may bepropositioned me. He bet me that he could either strike me out or force an out. This was a bold maneuver. Vincent knew I would not turn him down. Deciding to let him win in front of the parents, or shatter his confidence was tough. The entire team went out onto the field knowing that I would hit the ball for the reason that it was impossible to strike me out. I let him throw the first strike, and swung and missed on the second pitch. The parents joined in the action and cheered him on, with the hopes of seeing an elementary school kid strike out a high school baseball player. I came to the realization that I have much more to give than allowing Vincent to strike me out just to make the onlookers happy. I hit the…

On Saturday, December 12th, 2015, when arriving home around ten o'clock from a long wrestling meet that lasted till around nine o'clock, I got home, then ate dinner, and then went on the couch to relax. My mom complained "You're always so tired after wrestling and you come home so late." After a little conversation, my mom got to the point where she admitted "I don't want you to do wrestling." Prior to when she said that, on the way home, my stepfather also admitted "Your mom and I have been talking about how you should quit wrestling." Eventually during the conversation my mom and I shared, it all made sense. I knew I wasn't ready to give up wrestling because of what i think it means to me, but of course I started crying. This is that moment…

As the wrestling season approached one of the wrestlers kept asking me if I was going to wrestle and he was always disappointed when I would say no, but he would continue to ask me until I agreed to at least come to a few open mats, before the actual season starts. At the open mats I realized how little I actually knew about wrestling, but that fact aside it was fun. We would play dodgeball as part of our warm-up and as our cool down at the end, I foolishly thought that was going to be an everyday occurrence during the regular season, so I went out for the regular season, and received quite the reality check. I thought “You know what? I could go out for the heck of it and breeze through behind the scenes without having to put forth too much effort.” In the sport of wrestling there is no behind the scenes, when you step out onto the mat it is you and the wrestler across from you and no one else. The first few weeks, in any sport, are designed to weed out the weak and condition the athletes, it was at this time that I realized how hard this was going to be and I so badly wanted to quit. I would go home with a crushed feeling and with a look of despair on my…
