Personal Narrative: A Career As A Community Pharmacist
Although I had consistently been driven to pursue a career in the medical field, I gained a stronger inclination to become a pharmacist after shadowing a community pharmacist, during my final year of high school. Instantly, it was especially inspiring and intriguing to witness the reassurance that Dr. Aminov instilled in his patients and subsequently the trust and credence the patients had towards him. Dr. Aminov’s primary concern was the overall wellbeing of his patients and thus established a comforting environment, providing each patient with a personalized treatment experience. Furthermore, whilst shadowing Dr. Aminov, I encountered a vibrant patient who was explaining how the hormone treatments she was receiving was greatly increasing her quality of life, during postmenopausal changes. I also encountered a young adolescent who was taking an anti-anxiety drug, Xanax, which considerably helped reduce his panic attacks, and thus helped him live a more contented lifestyle. These are just a pair of the numerous accounts I have witnessed whilst shadowing Dr. Aminov. Such accounts have led to a deeper …show more content…
Weekly volunteering at Dorot has allowed me to build a strong rapport with the seniors. I vividly recall my first day as a volunteer, stepping into a setting comprised of dejected, isolated seniors. By weekly visits to the organization, I am able to provide a sense of comfort and companionship to the seniors, which inevitably positively impacts their overall health and wellbeing. Furthermore, members of the Alpha Lambda Delta society aim to aid the community, through various volunteer activities. Prior to Thanksgiving, we were able to not only organize a Canned Food Drive, but were also able to accumulate school essentials for the children of the local homeless

As I was looking for a Physician Assistant program I focused on three main things: research, prestige, and location. I was fortunate enough to discover that Yale PA program exceeded my expectations. As a clinical research assistant, I have had the pleasure to work with great clinicians (doctors and physician assistants alike) who have graduated from Yale Medical School and Yale PA program. Their perseverance, ability to react efficiently and decisively in difficult situations are some of the many qualities that Yale highlights and solidifies in its programs. Furthermore, shadowing one of the physician assistants who graduated from the Yale program gave me a better insight on the rigorously, expectations, and preparations of Yale PA program.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

During the summer I worked at a nursing home to gain some experience in the healthfield. Working as a certified nursing assistant really helped me grow and it is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had, it also was very challenging at times. As I said before I struggle with anxiety, but working as a nursing assistant pushed me to overcome some of the fears I had of communicating. I learned really quick when working in a nursing home you strongly need the ability to have good communication skills because without it you can’t communicate with the charge nurses, the residents or the other C.N.A’s. Everyday that I worked there I used different forms of communications such as body language which I learned says a lot about what a person is feeling.…

Many individuals are completely unaware of the variety of job opportunities that a pharmacist has. Unfortunately, pharmacists are sometimes seen as “peel and stick” workers, and do not get enough credit for the tasks that they complete behind the scenes. Whether a health-system pharmacist, community pharmacist, federal pharmacist, or pharmacy director they all play an imperative role in the health of a patient. There are a many opportunities for a 21st century pharmacist in the health care system. And, in my opinion, these opportunities are only going to grow more and more in the next few years.…

Ever since I was little, I would tell my dad every week a different job that I wanted when I grew up. As a little girl, I always dreamed of being an artist and traveling the world teaching children to paint. But as I grew up, I realized my dreams needed to turn to reality and that I would need to find a more realistic job. I then turned to the medical field because of its high demand and security. I knew I wanted to be a nurse, but I also wanted a larger paycheck, so I got my laptop and started my search on the MS Choices website that I was introduced to in school. I next interviewed my cousin, who is a nurse practitioner, so that she could answer all of my questions about this occupation. By searching the websites: MS Choices, MyFuture,…

My mom currently works as a pharmacist for the Public Health Service, a branch of the military. Her job is difficult, but allows for rewarding promotions to outstanding members each year. She has described the promotion process to me as a grueling event that is worsened by anticipation from the long wait for a response. Unfortunately, this previous year she did not receive the promotion that she had awaited and became quite emotional over the situation. The frustration she had was palpable over the phone and in that instant I knew that I had to try something to alleviate her pain. Due to our separation by many states, I offered to video chat with her in order to have an in-person conversation. I focused our discussion on what she can improve…

Empathy is the “ability to imagine oneself in another’s place and to understand the other’s feelings, desires, ideas, and actions” from The Encyclopedia Britannica. In today’s healthcare system, many healthcare providers such as pharmacists have forgotten the importance of empathy on the pharmacist-patient relationship. Often times pharmacists just talk to patients and not with patients, in this sales driven world time is everything. Big chain pharmacies such as Walgreens, and CVS are more concerned about making as much money as possible and push their pharmacists to do more and more scripts each day. This forces the pharmacist to worry more about filling scripts then about patient counseling simply because they do not have time to do so.…

As apart of my service, I assisted in helping the community as well as others through the Notre Dame Annual Pilgrimage, Harvest Kitchen at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church and participating in the Notre Dame Walk Against Male Violence. In October of 2010, I walked and raised money for the annual Pilgrimage at our school which involved trudging the distance from our school to the Allenburg Bridge. The money raised assisted those in third world countries mainly going to a facility called Yancana Huasy intended for the use by mentally and physically challenge young adults. The money is also sent to Haiti, Peru and the Dominican. As a volunteer for Harvest Kitchen my responsibility was to help deliver the meals to the people as well as work the handicap elevator in order to assist immobile people.
