Personal Experience: Deaf Community Analysis
The quiet, adroit girl who sits in the back of the classroom and keeps to herself is exactly who everyone thought I was during the first two and a half years of high school. Then, I became the quiet girl standing in front of the entire school, making silly, mesmerizing motions with her hands. Fifteen years from now, I will meet up with my old classmates again and not one of them will be surprised by me. My heart has been in the Deaf community ever since I started learning ASL my freshman year, so when I daily counsel deaf individuals rather than interpret for my deaf teacher, shock and awe will not be the first reaction I receive. Nevertheless, I will tell my old classmates that I have accomplished the world. When asked to explain, they will be disappointed when I tell them stories that appear minuscule in the scheme of things. Regardless, I will have touched lives. It is my altruism that will define who I become. Throughout my high …show more content…
Once, a girl came in and I started talking with her; she had an ASL background and knew enough signs to make conversation. We simply talked the entire time and got to know each other. I learned that she was hard of hearing, but no one focused on her enough to give her the care she needed. She struggles to keep up in school because she cannot hear, no assistance provided. Asking for someone to repeat something frustrates her to no end because people will shrug her aside, telling her "never mind". That day I was able to sit and listen to her for two hours. For that girl, I made her feel important and I hope to continue to invest in her life. In that moment, sitting there listening to this young girl who feels unimportant or even worthless, I knew every moment afterwards I would empathize with other individuals so that one day I can reveal to them the reason why they have worth, even if it seems unrecognizable to

Even though I did one simple thing, It has led to discoveries that shape our society. My hard work paved the path for the discovery of base pairs, which in turn led to a whole new study: Genetics. Genetics is the study of the DNA, chromosomes and base pairs that make up every living thing on Earth. In addition to this, we are able to do DNA testing now, which can tell you what diseases you are prone to, and drugs that could be harmful to you. This has saved hundreds of lives, and will save thousands more as testing becomes more available. Another idea that was caused by my discovery is the ability to manipulate DNA and remove potentially fatal genes. This is still in development, but it has almost been perfected. All of this never would have even taken place if I had never taken that one photo of DNA in 1951. You may think that this isn’t much, but what I did is essentially like pushing a snowball down a hill. As it tumbles down, it grows larger and larger into something more profound. My discovery has led to countless scientific advances, and I believe that I am someone important who should be known for generations to…

There is an array of reasons that Gallaudet is paramount, to the Deaf and hearing community. The country's first school dedicated to advancing the education for Americans with hearing loss. Gallaudet has paved the way for other Deaf schools and colleges. The great progression of other Deaf schools would not be what they are without the University to shadow after. In fact, it is viewed by deaf and hearing people alike as the primary resource for all things related to deaf, including fantastic educational and career opportunities; open communication and visual learning; deaf history and culture; American Sign Language; and the impact of technology on the deaf community.…

When I was walking into Food Lion to grab an item, I noticed an elderly woman struggling with trying to get her items to the car. At first I thought to myself how no one has helped her yet and then thought again that I should have already been there to help. My roommate noticed I ran off and she followed right behind. I then proceeded to ask the woman if she would like any sort of assistance with her groceries, the woman shook her head and said yes. Thomas K. Holcomb’s book, Introduction to American Deaf Culture, shines a light on the deaf community and the culture they experience. The intended audience, however, is the hearing. It gives the reader insight on deaf experiences and how the atmosphere is different, even though the environment is the same. All aspects of culture are covered. The book starts off with how the culture is formed through the 5 hallmarks (p. 17). Next, the book focuses on the identity of a deaf person. This is not only limited to, labeling from the rest of the world, but also by how the person sees himself. After, the book discusses the core values the deaf community has. These values are much different when compared to the hearing community. They focus on the person engaging as a full member of society. This is done through communication, interacting, and having a sense of self-worth in the community (104-107). Eventually, literature and art are mentioned. The classifications are difficult to place. There are American works, but with the growing awareness in the recent year they have earned their own Deaf category. This is important to the deaf community because it allows “Deaf people’s lives to be better…

One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. I am looking forward to describing my most memorable high school and college experiences. I would really love for my teachers to appreciate me for all the hard work I’ve done. For those people that didn’t know about my ambition and what it really meant to sacrifice, it meant a lot to my family. I’ve gotten involved in school activities, community service, and school events and a lot more. I felt that once I graduated from school I would be able to get involved with continuing education even more.…

As of now, I have placed in soccer tournaments with various soccer clubs (some of them in the premier division, which is the highest division in MOSA), won elementary school chess tournaments, won the "Catena Fun Run" for my age group, and got the most noteworthy presidential grant there is when I graduated fifth grade. I self-taught myself the piano and can play many classical pieces such as "Turkish March" and "Nutcracker", am in honors math and the gifted and talented program, made "Back in Black" band for my saxophone, and got to go to all the track meets for the 200 meter run, even winning one. Last of all, I received all A+s in every subject for every marking period in 7th grade. Each and every one of these achievements is a piece of my story, or my legacy, and could be considered as great accomplishments for one of my age. Obviously, though, I still have a lot more room to accomplish more and grow, and add bits of success to my legacy. I would like to have the success of being accepted into Biotec, and later go on to become a doctor of some sort. As I proceed with my life, I would also want accomplishments in my interests, activities, and schooling to become part of my legacy as well. However, accomplishments are great, but something else is an important part of your legacy- change. As of now, I haven't really made any immense or significant changes to the school or world. I mean, with everything you accomplish you definitely alter your school and world in some small way, but when I think of a great big change, I think of something that positively impacts everyone in a specific group, such as a school or world. This is why again, I don’t think I have made any huge changes as of now, but I would like to and without a doubt plan on doing so in the future. That's part of the reason I want to become a doctor- with every person they help heal, those people can get back on their feet and…

The greatest way to live life is through experiences. I have given back to my community the best I knew how; through education. I have volunteered at my old elementary school, Leonard Flynn, for years now. I have worked with younger children, hoping they will grow to appreciate their education the way I have. My experience as a teacher assistant has made me a more patient and caring person. It has also motivated me to use my knowledge to better someone’s future.…

Ever since I was young, I was always interested in the idea of helping people other than myself. I never knew the actual meaning of truly helping another person until October, 2010, my freshman year. My resolve for helping others sparked into a flame when I visited a church in San Jose where I experienced something that would completely change my life. At this church, there was an organization called Milal that helps take care of people with disabilities. It was in that place that I was able to learn the true meaning of helping others.…

An experience my daughter Madison shared with me came to mind (personal communication, November 21, 2010). Madison has always been fascinated with sign language. Her fascination prompted her to complete two courses in American Sign Language class (ASL), ASL101and ASL102, as well as participating in many activities as possible within the deaf community. This enabled her opportunity to learn about deaf culture from their perspective. Madison said there were approximately 30-35 deaf people at each event she attended. She learned deaf people did not see deafness as a…

Those who are teachers of Deaf and hard of Hearing students should always be conscious of the services and resources available within Deaf education. Those wanting to work as educators of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students must be willing to expand their roles in order to increase their student’s language learning and instructional success (Easterbrooks, 2008). They need to be willing to work with the student’s families and help give them knowledge on what might be the best choice for their child’s education. The teachers need to be knowledgeable about Deaf culture and the importance of it to their Deaf or Hard of Hearing students. Easterbrooks (2008) stated, “A teacher of the deaf needs to be aware of all these unique aspects of the Deaf community to provide an appropriate response to general education…” (p. 13). Also, the teachers must be aware that their students may use different communication and learning styles and must be prepared to use any tools that can help with their students’ academic…

    Deaf Culture Reflection

When I started taking classes that taught me about the characteristics of Deaf culture, I became convinced that this was what I wanted to major in. I learned that deaf people who are part of the Deaf community, are proud of their culture. They celebrate when a deaf child is born. As a hearing person I thought to myself, who would want their child to be deaf? I learned though that those who are a part of the community are Deaf first, and that it why they take such pride in their culture. Then there are deaf people who rather not be a part of the Deaf community. They rather identify themselves as everything but deaf. It’s fascinating to me how there are two completely opposing sides on this spectrum, two sides that I never knew of. I never knew Deaf culture existed, but now that I am aware of it, I can’t help…
