Personal Action Plan
For my Personal Action Plan Observation, I decided to go to Nordstrom’s one of the major stores in the South Park Mall, which most people in Charlotte N.C. referred to as the wealthy peoples mall. I chose this mall because I wanted to observe the various types of people, and identify the social differences of the individuals coming into the store to shop The Observation

Upon entry the store I decided to talk to one of the store managers and notified him of my class project. I told him I would need to observe individuals in a public environment and needed his permission to spend time in his establishment. He let know

A young woman named Jodi and several other of her family members were in Nordstrom’s at the time looking at clothing on the sales rack. She appeared to be in her late twenties or early thirties. I learned she was in town for the funeral of her grandfather, one of the co-founders of Belk’s department stores. She also disclosed her great uncle was John Belk, he was the mayor of Charlotte and has a freeway named after him (John Belk Freeway). She stated in the days when her father was a child he was raised like the children in “The Help” a movie about Caucasian children in the south cared for and raised by Black women. She said when her mother married her father she wanted her children to grow up in a more normal household and with values. She wanted them to appreciate the simple things in life. All I could think was what an amazing story. I realized everyone has a story to tell, and you can never tell a person’s background until it is told by him or her. How My Perceptions Changed. Observing the customers in the department store have changed some of my perceptions; I use to believe people with money were mostly Caucasian, disrespectful, self-centered, entitled, and had no sympathy for those less fortunate. Since the observation I believe this is not the case for many of the individuals. I believe most individual can be empathetic to others need, but it depends on the environment and with what morals an individual was raised. I still believe …show more content…
The majority of the individuals came into the store, browsed the racks of clothing, pulling out clothing, trying them on, and making purchases. I notice many of the women would look at the price tags of the garments before they made the purchase. I browsed some of the racks as well and noticed some of the items I would be able to afford as well. I also notice many of the women were using charge cards to pay for his or her purchases. Not many of the women used cash. Several of the women were socially conscious and were conscientious of other needs. They waited patiently until the sales representative finished with the customer ahead of him or her. I also encountered the arrogant, entitled, obnoxious, attention-seeking individual who is very impatient and wants she needs met immediately. Type of Social Inequality Observe. As I browsed, though the racks of clothing, I can honestly say I did not observe any inequality. I was in the store for approximately three hours and even the change of shift was a smooth transition. I did notice that after the change of shift the new sales representatives would approach its customers to see if they could be of any assistance they never approached me. Maybe they were aware I was not a buying customer and was just

Internal Customers – In a superstore, Internal Customers expect a high quality of standards. For example for the bare minimum, the shop should be clean. By this I mean the floors should be clean (spillages immediately dealt with), the stock should be stacked tidily, and the toilets should be clean. As I said that is the minimum that any shop could probably get away with. In order to further themselves, a store should have regularly cleaned toilets (hourly checks), polite and well-spoken staff, as these are the people that represent whatever company it may be. Internal customers would also perhaps expect specialised parking because of the fact they are staff, this is a good idea however, as it means the customers can park easily without staff taking their spaces. Another expectation would be the need for well-lit shops, if you walk in to a store and the lights are dim and boring, this doesn’t give a good impression, bright lights make the shop more vibrant and makes customers and employees feel much more awake. Also, even though Internal customers are employees of the shop, since they are currently not working, they would not be permitted to enter the ‘warehouse’ to get something which isn’t on the shelf and would have to ask another member of staff for assistance.…

The ancillary retail system in downtown Toronto is one of the most unique retail systems in the world. It is an underground shopping center that connects all the major banks and towers in the core of the city. The specific area that we investigate is called “First Canadian Place” and it is located on King & Bay St. This geographic region is one of the most densely engaged regions in all of Canada and this is because of the large skyscrapers that are located on top of this retail center. Its primary customers are upper-middle class workers that are working in the surrounding banks and institutions. Most of the consumers are not wearing jackets and this suggests that they were able to access this center without going outdoors. This is a significant advantage because people are more willing to go to areas that are easily accessible. The retail center is easily accessible by many different types of transportation. There are two subway stations that are located within this area and there are also buses on the street level. As well, it is very accessible by foot because the retail center is connected to many other different shopping centers in the core of Toronto. There are many different types of stores in this retail center but they are all focused on “white collars”. Most of the customers are workers in large firms…

Nothing particular stuck out at me at first, I gazed around, from table to table, and only noticed the general routines you would expect to find at any mall food court. Employee’s meeting on their lunch breaks, stay at home mom’s getting a quick bite at chik-fil-a as they drag their children along to the next errand, and the elderly in no hurry to get anywhere specific. It was the same mundane routine through the course of the first hour, it only being four in the afternoon, many kids were still in school, and adults at work. The mall was close to barren as a few moms strolled around leisurely, baby’s at hip, or teetering along side of them. Many of these moms were white, caucasions, displaying their obvious means of wealth in the jewlrey that they wore, and the handbags they carried. Two mothers sat infront of me as I observed the food court, while casually picking at their grilled chicken salads in front of them, and their children ran wild in the play place that was within eye sight. They didn’t speak to anyone who passed by, nor did they bother themselves with helping another lady who was in an clear pannick after finding out that her son was no longer by her side and had ventured off sometime when she was ordering lunch. They kept to themselves, immersed in their own gossip, only rising to coo their children after having a wipe out on the kiddy slide.…

When we went to Weis, we tried to keep an eye on how people were shopping along with how the store made it easier for people to shop. We tried watching different types of people, to get many points of views. We made sure we followed around a single person, a group of people, and a family. We did see some differences in how they shopped, but we do not think it was because how the store was laid out. A person…

City Road in Cardiff is a busy consumer-driven street dominated by restaurants, takeaways and shops selling a variety of items from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. In this essay I will be looking at how these retailers favour some groups of consumers they cater for, the younger female population for instance and exclude other members of the population, along with how the infrastructure on the road and pavements makes life easier for some groups of people and potentially hinders others.…

The author continually goes to different situations of when she grew up in Bensonhurst and at times I thought this was confusing. I think that she should have had a strong thesis to support her claim of what it meant to be female, white, and born in Bensonhurst from her point of view rather than the point of view of parents, family members and Bensonhurst neighbors.…

This is an important area of study because of how relevant shopping and customer-employee interactions are to our everyday lives as citizens and consumers. Additionally, the study is useful to scholars of sociology, as well as audiences interested in the sociological theory of how retail employees might act in given circumstances. The study found that when different perspectives came into conflict, the first priority of Macy’s employees was to maintain the company’s culture of professionalism, politeness and civility. I speculate that this is because the cost of a “performance breakdown” is particularly severe in culture, but less so with respect to politics or…

Ruth McBride was a Jewish immigrant to the United States. After traveling around the country with her family, they settled down in Suffolk, Virginia and opened a general store, which they lived above. This general store was located in a predominately black part of town. As a Jew, she felt as though she could relate to the hardships of the black people near her. Especially since during these times, she realized that the Ku Klux Klan and the white population in general gave off a tense and violent vibe. In her adult life, she married a black man, Andrew Dennis McBride, whom she had eight children with. The family lived in Harlem, New York for years and she worked at low-end jobs. She found herself socializing with black people, and living the life of a black woman. After moving away from her family, Ruth needed a stress-reliever and converted to Christianity, which is she found her sense of relief and the power of forgiveness. After Andrew passed, she remarried to Hunter Jordan, who fathered four of her now twelve children. Hunter died of a stroke, which lead to her family’s grieving and terribly mourning Hunter’s death.…

    My Day At The Mall

My next visit was to Footlocker. The policy of meeting the customer in the first thirty seconds was out of the door here. I must have looked around there for at least five minutes before I was able to get some help. The employees usually don't approach a customer in a shoe store while they're still looking around. That could have been the reason why or it could have been the fact that the store was a little busy. When I was finally approached by an employee, it was more of laid back approach. "Hey what's up, what can I do for you today?" Even though I was just there for an assignment, the employee made me want to make a purchase. The store was a little out of order from customers looking at sizes of different shirts that were folded nicely before. But most of all, it was a laid back store with slightly inconsiderate customers and down to earth employees.…
