Along with being a physician and scientist, Dr. D was also an athlete. He was a leading weight lifter in the U.S., he traveled to Vienna, Austria for a wrestling meet. While he was there, he talked to a Russian trainer who told him that Russian athletes had discovered a miracle drug, anabolic steroids. The athletes had enormous strength gains from this new drug. Dr. Z. wanted to help his country keep up with the Russian competition so when he came home he started prescribing them for his weight lifting friends. The most popular steroid formed under his company is called Dianabol, which still exists today. In time the doctor realized the incredible harm that steroids caused and turned against them. Right before he died in 1984 he said he wished he had never heard of steroids Dolan, 1986. Of course steroids aren’t the only performance enhancing drugs. Amphetamines are another popular performance enhancing drug. The popularity of amphetamines in sports is because of the drugs ability to give the body an enormous sense of energy. Just like steroids, amphetamines are widely abused. In 1970 the U.S. government passed strict laws against amphetamine abuse Dolan, 1986. These listed are just a few of the many abused drugs being used in athletics. All in all, use by athletes is getting out of hand.
The uses of these drugs are outrages! Athletes around the world are getting more and more comfortable with using Performance Enhancing Drugs, Even though it comes with consequences and possible jail time. Today’s athletes feel that these drugs increase their performances on the playing field of whatever sport they participate in and it gives them the extra edge on their opponents. When in reality, These drugs are really tearing up their body and is making them weaker each time they use the drug.
In conclusion, Today’s sports associations need to crack down on steroid use and should increase drug test. These Performance Enhancing Drugs are killing some of our premier athletes of our world today at very young ages as they have been using these drugs at young ages. Overall, the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, ETC. Needs to increase suspension and fine rates as these athletes use some of these drugs as it determents their insides and their performances on the field, court, diamond, ETC. Once again younger kids and teens look up to these premier athletes of today and the past who have dominated the sports they had participated in, We don’t want these kids thinking using steroids is cool because his favorite player uses them. We want them to think clean play is the best play and you will dominate in the best way, So Stop drug USE!!!!!
