PCR: Life of a Sensuous Woman Saikaku
I can say without a doubt that the piece “ Life of a Sensuous Woman” by Ihara Saikaku empowers women. This piece tells you a story of the life of an old woman; How the choices and lifestyle she chose influence not only her but the people she encountered. This piece from Saikaku is capable of motivating other women to become confident and comfortable with who they are. The life experience the old lady went through is enough to allow women to view themselves more than just object that are meant to please a man. Saikaku made this abundantly clear each time the old lady decided that she had enough of her current situation. One example of this is when she was with the old chief priest who locked her in temple. The old woman was tired of been treated badly that she came up with a plan to free herself from the priest. The decision she made was because she was tired of feeling sorry for herself that she felt empowered enough to change situation. This story gave a different perspective in one definition of POWER, in contrast to the idea that men were more powerful than women during this time. The old lady represented the sensuous women during this time who were able to control the lives of the men she encounters through her sexual features.
What the old woman’s tale told me about the “adaptability” of women, or of people in general was that people are able to adapt to different situation and circumstances in order to feel even a little happy with themselves. In old woman’s tale she had different jobs that enabled her to see things from a contrasting perspective. She worked as a mistress, wife, teacher, nun, and a messenger for a lord’s wife. During all this jobs she encountered different living situation that she had to adjust to in order for her to survive. The old woman was trying to tells us that human being are very adaptable creature. With all the thing she had to go through in

The women of these novels showed feminine empowerment. Although they had obstacles that could have over come them they still stood against them and showed that females can be strong and independent too. Devasmita was struggling with being away from her husband while trying to be tricked into doing the merchants' sons but she showed feminine empowerment by deciding to trick them and make them be punished. This proved that females could also have power to do things and weren't just to be around to clean, cook and do what their husbands wanted. Shahrazad is the definition of feminine empowerment she stood against male authority the whole novel and didn't step down. Her role in The Thousand and One Nights was to teach the king a lesson, this showed her will to go against authority to teach a male a lesson. These females were devoted to what they wanted to do and wouldn't stop.…

“She had resolved never to take another step backward”(). The definition of ‘power’ can be described as the ability or capability to direct or influence the behavior of others. Edna Pontellier, a character in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, is one woman who constantly struggled and achieved her desire to free herself from the power of 19th century societal views of women. As a result of steady ambitious behaviour and recognition of the closed off thinking of 1800’s civilians, Mrs. Pontellier was able to become the woman she knew she was meant to be.…

It is evident throughout history that women are seen as a lesser power in comparison to their male counterparts. The texts Erin Brockovich (Erin Brockovich, 2000), The Help (The Help , 2011), and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Kesey, 1962), discuss this power imbalance and convey the way in which women adapt to their societal context and measurement, making use of unconventional power. Institutional power which operates through gender commonly impacts society in a negative manner, resulting in retaliation through unconventional power by oppressed groups. Male characters within these texts have power which related to wealth, employment and politics; where as women have the power of their bodies, sexuality and the power over their home as the homemaker.…

Women can make a huge impact. The story of Antigone reflects this by Antigone fighting on what she believes something that no man was willing to do. As human beings, the need for power is as strong as a need for love or belonging. In The Naked Citadel by Susan Faludi the students grab this power from women or even other students. They are stripped down to nothing and the only way they see to regain this power is through dominating the opposite gender and even violently taking control of their own gender. Through Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi the male government and male figures in their lives oppress the women, and they ultimately find refuge in a literature class that break down these gender barriers. In both articles the constant search for true identity of a broken down human being forces, whether good or bad, a search of an important form of power.…

Reading all this books made me realize what feminism really is and how it revolves around matrifocal, matrilineal and matriarchal. All these stories talks about the women in different ages have gone through. All these stories are all connected by the message they give. The first story was the introduction from Bell hooks book. my first impressions and personal response of the reading is that people judge us women way too much. They think we can't do things because who we are. Reading further along made me feel really sad that people don't believe in us women we are downgraded by society and that influences the people. Us women have so much to bring to the table as well as men do, we are human and should be treated like humans. One strengths…

A woman is a sword. She is struck by unseen blows and thrust into suffocating flames—repeatedly. She is tempered by her hardships and emerges as a sword, to strike fear in the hearts of her enemies. With men assuming positions of power and prestige throughout the ages, women have been overlooked. Although the United States is established on the idea of equality, women continue to be oppressed and face inequality. In Adrienne Rich’s commencement speech, “What Does a Woman Need to Know”, she talks about what women should understand, in order to prosper in the “real world.” The same perception occurs in an excerpt of Ariel Levy’s book “ Female Chauvinist Pigs”; Levy grabs your attention about how women have learned to adapt to male qualities in order to succeed in their prestige. Both authors show us that in order to liberate women who are oppressed by men, we must defeat the system that produced the oppression that is still being built to keep women down.…

“Behaviour of Fish in an Egyptian Tea Garden” by Keith Douglas is about a beautiful woman and her power to seduce, manipulate men of any age. The author uses metaphors and similes by comparing the woman “as a white stone” and men as fishes “A cotton magnate/… A crustacean” to show how men’s behavior are like of any other animal species or as predictable as fish. The author keeps the imagery of a large aquatic marine environment to consistently illustrate the relationship between that of an aquatic marine life to the behavior of men, “fish”, towards a single, attractive woman. This constant, predictable “behavior” pattern could be exploited to manipulate and control if someone, the woman, wishes to.…

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness” (Martin Luther King, Jr Quotes). A person has the choice to stand up for what they believe in or fall behind in the shadows. For many centuries, women have had to lead the fight against patriarchal nations. Women have made tremendous steps towards equality between the sexes by progressively improving their role in society. A dependency on male figures has prohibited this process from developing further and faster. Through excessive dependence on others, individuals tend to lack the ability to be self-motivated leading them to be more vulnerable demonstrated through Ophelia’s dependency on men in Hamlet and Michelle…

Weak, dull, emotional, powerless—these are the words associated with women back in the old days. A woman never had the mind or power to do things her own way. Her duty was just to follow orders, have a family and be a good wife. In other words, do absolutely nothing for herself. Men have overlooked the fact that women can in fact do what men can do, too. As time went by, society has accepted this one true fact: the modern woman is strong, independent and smart, and one woman proves this to me every single day—my mother.…

Girl Power! What does that mean? Women who openly display their power, knowledge, and skill, receiving public recognition and honor. But also females who manage to wield power in societies that try to limit it or decree female submission; where their leadership is stigmatized and their creativity disdained. And women who resist and overthrow oppressive traditions and regimes. Who break the rules in defiance of unjust legal and religious "authorities." Who pursue their vision in spite of the personal cost.…
