    The American Federation of Teachers was founded in 1916 by eight local teachers. However, the American Federation of Teachers had lost majority of their members by 1920. The union fought hard for tenure laws for long standing teachers as well as teachers who were being sought after for having differing views and beliefs than those in the political arena especially during World War I.
