Morebath was a quaint parish in Eastern England. The book The Voices of Morebath covers many day to day events that occurred between the years of 1520-1574. Duffy goes to great lengths to paint a picture of the community. A recurring theme during this tale is one of piety. According to Duffy there was: “…no rigid distinction was drawn between the community at prayer and the community as it went about its business” Religion pervaded every nook and cranny of the parishioners lives. He offers up more evidence by explaining that in one instance the chalice used in the Eucharist was stolen and the young men and women of the parish all pitched in and bought a new one in order to carry on the ritual. Despite all of this evidence, Duffy does take a moment to reflect that this piety may have actually been, for some, merely a show in order to fit in with the rest of the community. Some may have been acting religious just to not be shunned and cast out from the community.…

People he doesn’t even know are praying for him as well, and even Bauby accepts to get taken to a church on one Sunday although he says he is not religious at all. Bauby really dislikes Sundays because the hospitals are nearly empty these days so when a nurse offers to take him to a church, he gladly accepts so he is not stuck spending the day alone in the hospital, and at church, Bauby is blessed and gets a communion even though he does not want it to happen. When the priest mentions having a communion, Bauby is reminded of his trip with an old girlfriend to Lourdes to find a Madonna. The film as a whole is a very religious film discretely displaying French Catholicism with the church visits, the shrine at Lourdes, the crosses hung around the necks of the nurses in the hospital that work with Bauby, and the prayers of his ex-wife and…

As the years progressed, Rodriguez became more involved with the church as an altar boy and his academic life and church life were blended. This changed once Rodriguez went to high school, as he admits that he went to church less often. His view of the church also changed as he once saw it as very spiritual, but now saw that “religious instruction became rigorously intellectual” (Pg 110). His identity as a Catholic who was similar to his parents (his view as a child) now changed as he came to the realization that “my parents assumed a Catholicism very different from mine. My parents seemed to me piously simple…unwilling to entertain intellectual challenges” (pg 110). Rodriguez’s views morphed into a very intellectual and studious view, once again altering his identity…

In the opening story of San Ciappelletto, Boccaccio presents a man driven by complete wickedness who is “perhaps the worst man that ever was born” (Boccaccio 26). He lies, cheats, steals and commits virtually every sin in the Bible many times over. Yet, despite his life of utter corruption, Ciappelletto is memorialized as a good and “holy man” who lived a devout life (Boccaccio 34). Having succeeded in trickery throughout his career as a lawyer, Ciappelletto saves his ultimate ruse for his deathbed confession when he dupes a friar and is venerated as a saint. Thus Ciappelletyo is rewarded for his deception. He succeeds in both preserving the memory of himself after death, however false this memory might be, and creating the ultimate mockery of the church, which he so deeply reviled during his life. Here, Boccaccio shows the ease of deception through faith and religion. Very few people at that time would dispute a person’s deathbed confession to a man of God, or for that matter the friar’s re-telling of Ciappelleto’s story. Ultimately, because of his wit, Ciappelletto dies a satisfied man who escapes any earthly consequence for his deceptive ways.…
