Patient Observation Report
Before my sophomore year, I shadowed Dr. Ball, a family doctor at Eagle Ranch Clinic. Although many view shadowing as passive, Dr. Ball kept me engaged. Because the clinic was an educational clinic, Dr. Ball was used to students shadowing her. As we met with her patients, she would address questions I had and she would invite me to come close to observe anything she identified. Most significant though, was observing Dr. Ball’s interactions with her patients. Despite seeing numerous patients, Dr. Ball made sure to show each compassion and care. It was clear that her patients trusted her and she not only focused on a patient’s current health issues, but also focused on addressing any questions the patient had about their condition.     PROCEDURE: The patient was brought into the operating room and placed on the operating table where spinal anesthesia was induced. The right lower extremity was prepped with bednine solution. A newmatic ankle tourniquet was placed over Webril padding above the right ankle joint. The leg was evaluated for proximately two minutes and the tourniquet was raised to 275 millimeters of mercury.     "Narratives" or stories have been used throughout the history of the human race to allow and help people to express themselves in ways that promote personal growth and enhance physical well-being. Even in the simplest of contexts, narratives are a core factor in the advancement of the humanity/society and all of its facets. An illustration of this can be seen in the transfer of a family 's lineage, history, and values from generation to generation. This allows for the recipient of this information to have a greater knowledge of his/her own family and the history surrounding it. Oral narratives and writings, such as journals, stories, or speeches to others are stress-relieving mechanisms that can reduce the external stress. The narrating of one 's thoughts definitely does not initially affect the external stressors one is facing. Narrating does, however, allow one to share these feelings with others and to organize one 's thoughts around these issues. More significantly, narrative opportunities such as these, work to encourage and advance constructive contexts in which individuals such as a mother and daughter or father and son can openly communicate any differences, worries, or problems one might be having with daily living.
