A Concept Analysis if Patient Centered Care
Concept analysis is a process of researching, gaining knowledge of concepts for the purpose of clarification or further development. Concept analysis should be conducted when concepts require clarification or further development to define them for a nurse scholar’s purposes, whether that is research, theory development, or practice (Walker & Avant, 2011). Through the utilization of (Walker & Avant, 2011) method for the analyzing framework as well as the application Jean Watson’s caring theory adopt a clear definition of patient centered care. A scholarly literature review of the concept of patient centered care, identify the purpose, uses, defining attributes, two model cases, two alternative cases, one antecedent, one consequence, two empirical referents, and concluding statements presenting new knowledge on the concepts acquired from writing this paper.
Purpose of Analysis The purpose of the following analysis is to link the adopted definition of patient centered care presented in the scholarly literature and its relevance to nursing practice. A concept analysis using Walker and Advant’s strategic method as well as Jean Watson’s caring theory, this paper will discover the concept of patient centered care and its relevance to nursing practice. According to (Watson, 2012) nurses need to “Communicate with and provide physical care to patients using a holistic approach that promotes healing of mind, body, and spirit.”

Patient is a noun that means a person who receives medical care or treatment according to (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Centered is an adjective that means to be mainly concerned about or involved with something specified (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Care is a noun that means the responsibility for or attention to health, well-being, and safety or to give care to the sick (Merriam-Webster, 2014). The (IOM, 2010) refers to patient centered care as “acknowledging the differing needs, values and beliefs of people from ethnically diverse communities. Adult nurses engage in and develop therapeutic relationships that involve patients and their care givers in ongoing decision making that informs nursing care.” According to (JMSN, 2013) “Patient-centered care refers to the therapeutic relationship between health care providers and recipients of health care services.” The (PCIG, 2014) states, “Patient-centered care is about engaging the hearts and minds of those you work with and those you care for.
