Overcoming Obstacles Of My Life
From the other side of the Earth, my parents came to America for freedom, democracy, and new dreams. As a Chinese American, I spoke only Mandarin at home until kindergarten. I was in a maze of frustration and confusion. I was living in a different world. However, I overcame these obstacles through practice, hard work, smiles, and friendship. I made friends who helped me assimilate and were willing to help me through tough social situations.

Equipped with a more solid English background in middle school, I joined the choir. Through choir, I took on main leads in school plays. I played the role of the Emperor in The Emperor’s New Clothes. In spite of the embarrassment of wearing my underwear on stage, I was gratified when my friends and the

This program reinforced my desire to pursue my dreams in a science or health

Language was not always easy to speak, write, and understand when I first moved here from India. Understanding two different culture shocks from Indian culture and American culture, was surely one of the toughest part about moving to the United States was. Everything was very different from my skin color to the way I spoke English. I want to talk about how I came across obstacles in my life in America. I was only eleven years old when I came to United States. I started going to school few months before 5th grade end. Then when I was in 6th Grade, I was the only Burmese person in school. I was bullied and insulted in school for who I am and where I came from. Before I came to United States, I thought everybody would be friendly to me and help me in anyway that they can, because I’ve been hearing all the great things about United States. When I got here, it was totally opposite of what I thought it would be. I had no fun going to school. All I thought about was to go back to my country, but something inside of me kept telling me that I have to work hard to make my parents…

Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. When in fact I set myself up for one of the biggest challenges of my life so far, by signing up for multiple online college classes, helping out with activities all over the school, and playing football for the first time since freshman year. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential,…

I have developed a new kind of mental toughness through my competitive drive to continually better myself everyday. The decision to get deeper into this spurred from a terrible place in my life. Living in an abusive home when I was younger taught me that no one should ever be able to hold power over you.…

I rise when I am told. I slow and speed when needed. I am tough. I am rugged. I comfort you and protect you. I see no color, race, religion, or gender. I grab life by the wheel and steer through it with ease. I roar, I screech, I growl. I glide around the road of life. Every morning awake in the shadows of comfort. With minor tweaks to my bodywork I am ready for the day. I turn my key and open the garage, ready to emerge from the shadows of comfort and drive the road of life. For in my life I will see many friends, enemies, and fans. My friends will build me up to become the fiercest car on the track. They will help fix me when I collide with obstacles. My friends will guide me through the road of life. My enemies try to overtake me and pass…
