Hello Sarah,

I have learned from different anthropology, that taboo is just what a society regards as forbidden, it is not something universal and it does not apply to everyone.

Tattoos can be a way of identifying a tribe, or can represent someone’s status, and can serve as protection for superstitious cultures. Tattoos have different meaning for different people, for example, Otzi, his tattoos could have been meant as therapeutic rather than symbolic.

    Researchers in Italy announced in January 2015, that they had discovered an unusual, but new tattoo on the ribcage of the 5,300 year old mummy known as "Otzi" the Iceman. The total amount of tattoos on Otzi's body is 61. However, Dr. Albert Zink and one of his colleagues told the Huffington Post in an email, "We didn't expect to find a tattoo on the thoracic, as all the other tattoos are mainly close to joints and on his lower back and legs."
