Othello And Iago Essay
In the play Othello, our first impression suggests that Iago and Othello are portrayed as having somewhat opposite qualities.

Iago is first shown to be false and pretentious. Even though he says "I will wear my heart upon my sleeve", giving the impression that he shows all his emotions willingly, he is then shown to be quite secretive and deceitful, plotting against Othello, Casio and Rodriguo, emphasising his ambitious nature. Furthermore we get the impression that he is spiteful and racist, building up his hatred and jealousy towards Othello, "I hate the Moor".

We also get the impression that Iago is manipulative. Firstly, he promises Rodriguo Desdemona in return for his aid, luring him into his grasp using one of Rodriguo's desires, "It

    One of the starting blocks for Iago’s scheme is Roderigo’s deal with Iago, where Roderigo pays Iago money in exchange for Desdemona’s affection.     Iago is one of the most interesting characters in Othello. He is full of jealousy, greed, selfishness, and hatred. At first, it seems Iago is only jealous of Othello because he has chosen Cassio for lieutenant instead of Iago. When it is revealed Iago is developing a plot in order to take down Othello, a shift in Iago’s character is seen. He is not only jealous, but he acts on his jealousy, making him appear crueler than when first introduced. As Iago explains, “The Moor is of a free and open nature that thinks men honest that but seem to be so, and will as tenderly be led by th' nose as asses are. I have ’t. It is engendered!
