SECTION 1: CASE SUMARY

Gioe Melaney is the general director of Southern Toro – a subsidiary company included in the distribution system of Toron Coporation in Galveston, Taxas. The case concentrates on the conversation between Melaney and his son about the company’s inventory level and ways to manage goods orders of the upcoming spring seaso. So far, the company has changed the method of managing orders through purchasing the Rytech computer system, nevertheless, it seems that Joe Father has not totally trusted this system. Rytech system is expected to reduce the level of inventory by 30% through the method Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) applied in the period of re-ordering each product. This solution is based on the fact that Toro is now having three fixed ordering times in a year. However, Joe Father only trusts his market sensbibility. He always makes orders on the basis of previous consummption levels, and then adjusts goods quantities after receiving addtional inforrmation of the fluctuation in demands. Therefore, his inventory turnover is estimated to be at least 3 turns/year. At the moment, there is existing inefffectiveness in storage of two products : gear driven rotary whose sales have slumped recently and Monitor controller- the spare part has the function of insurance for several dedicated customers. On the contrary, the 1 inche valve series 230 is very much in demand, even already

Murthy, vice president of manufacturing for ToysPlus, Inc., finished reading the weekly production report for the week ended January 27, 2012. Inventories were up once again, and service levels were lower than expected. Murthy wondered why these problems could not be solved once and for all. Last year he had installed a new IBM production and inventory control system on the company’s mainframe computer. While the system drastically reduced inventories and improved service levels at first, things had gotten worse over the last few months.…

Lauren Worth is excited about her new job at Cardinal Hospital. Lauren had worked at Cardinal, first as a candy-striper, and then, after college, as a registered nurse. After several years “working the wards,” Lauren left Cardinal to get an MBA. Now, having recently graduated, Lauren had returned to Cardinal as its first “Inventory Manager.” Lauren’s boss, Lee Atwood, is Purchasing Manager at Cardinal Hospital. Lauren has known Lee since her days as a candy-striper, and regards him as a friend. Lee describes himself as being from the “old school” of inventory management. “Lauren, I know that there are sophisticated methods for managing inventories, and, in particular for determining ‘optimal order-quantities.’ And, I know that Cardinal is paying a ‘management-cost penalty’ for using other than optimal orderquantities. In other words, that Cardinal is incurring higher than the minimum possible inventory-management costs in managing its inventories. But, frankly, I’m skeptical about what it will cost Cardinal…

The Kanban system, developed by Toyota Motor Corporation in the late 1940s, is an inventory management system that uses a pull strategy to signal upstream when and which inventory needs replacement. The Kanban system is related to just-in-time production, meaning that little to no excess inventory is carried, rather, the inventory is manufactured and stocked exactly when it is needed. Prior to advancements in technology, the Kanban system used physical cards on each product that were collected and relayed to the supplier when sold. Once the cards were collected, the supplier knew exactly which products needed to be replenished at each retail location and could adjust their manufacturing and shipments accordingly. This process reduces the need for inventory demand forecasting on the supplier’s end as well as simplifies the inventory ordering process on the retailer’s end.…

    Inventory Management

Every company irrespective of the type of product or service that it sells holds a form of inventory in its daily business operations. Inventory is generally held in the form of finished goods, work in progress i.e. unfinished products as is normally the case in manufacturing and raw materials. Inventory is considered a current asset in a company since it can be itemized in the books of accounts and has a definite economic value. Companies are interested in holding optimum inventory levels at all times since excess inventory results in incremental costs and blocks working capital which affects the overall performance of the company at the end of each financial year (Ou, Liu, Hung & Yen, 2010). Holding less than optimum inventory on the other hand, can easily reduce a company’s market share as clients move to competition due to disruption in supply of products into the market. Inventory management thus involves continuous monitoring of inventory levels, smart planning and quick decision making in the part of management of a company. Companies must therefore be careful not to overstock the wrong product, over-order the wrong inventory or under stock since each has far reaching implications to the company’s performance (Bernardel, Panizzolo & Martinazzo, 2012).…
