First and foremost, most child soldiers are taken against their will to fight in a conflict. In his BBC article, Child Soldiers Still Being Recruited in South Sudan, Tom Burridge (A BBC correspondent) wrote about the recruitment process for child soldiers in South Sudan’s ongoing civil war. During his visit to South Sudan, Tom met with a few boys who have been child soldiers, and one of them was a boy named Stephen. Rebels closed in on Stephen's unsuspecting school while class was in session. “Stephen describes being frozen with fear as the rebel fighters took him and more than 100 of his classmates.” It wasn’t his decision or his classmates’ decisions to fight for the rebels. In a Rolling Stone article, Former Guantanamo Bay Prisoner Omar Khadr Released on Bail, the author talks about releasing Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr on bail. Omar Khadr is a former child soldier from Al Qaeda. After he shot and killed an American soldier in combat, he got incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay, the highest maximum security prison in the US. He was abused and tortured, and the facilitators at the detention camp violated the Geneva Conventions (The Geneva Conventions are a series of treaties on the treatment of civilians, prisoners of war, and soldiers who are incapable of fighting) when handling Omar. His extended time in prison has slowly taken his life and future away from him. “‘I have…a lot of basic skills I need to learn,’ he said. ‘I'm excited to start my life. I can't change the past. All I can do is work on the present and the future.’” With this in mind, child soldiers should receive both amnesty and education. Without further developing the children’s education, their lives will be mostly unsuccessful and unproductive.
