Its competitive strength is due to its association with Nissan, Samsung Motors and Dacia, which gives it an advantage in R&D, production and distribution. Ten years into the Alliance, Renault and Nissan take cooperation to a higher level with the creation of a dedicated team to expand cooperation and maximize synergies between the two partners. The competitive production capacity at the Dacia production base coupled with Renault’s technical expertise form the two most critical factors in the company's product line renewal strategies. In addition, despite the crisis, the Renault group has grown its market share. Seven of the company’s vehicles were awarded with top five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests, thus demonstrating that Renault’s vehicles have one of the best safety features. In 2008, all manufacturing sites within the Renault perimeter were certified ISO 14001. Latest to obtain the certification were the sites of Somaca (Morocco) and Avtoframos Weakness The Renault is greatly dependent on Western Europe for its sales, which is contributing with 72.8% of its total sales. This will have a great impact if the company’s market share (for cars and LCVs) would decline. In addition, the CAGR of auto production for Western Europe (from 2005-2007) is forecasted to decline by 0.2%. Then, the company should diversify its geographical customer base. Opportunities The geography-based synergies developed by the alliance with Nissan will create a great opportunity to be leveraged over the long term. Many model launches, such as Twingo, Megane and Logan are expected to contribute to the company’s earnings. In the long term, Renault is looking at developing its presence in the US at the industrial as well as commercial…

Hyundai: Leading the Way in the Global Auto Industry The global automotive industry is one of the largest and most internationalized business sectors. There are seventeen major global automotive companies producing more than one million cars a year. Hyundai Motor Company is South Korea’s number one carmaker and the tenth largest in the world. It sells vehicles in over 190 countries, producing about a dozen car and minivan models, plus trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles. Popular models in the United States are the Accent and Sonata, while exports to Europe and Asia include the GRD and Equus. In 2008, during the global financial crisis, Hyundai earned a profit of $1.3 billion—among the best in the global auto industry. The Industry During the recent global financial crisis, global automotive sales declined to near-record lows. Automotive industry profits suffered due to significant excess production capacity. Although there is capacity to produce 80 million cars worldwide, total global demand fell to only about 60 million a year. This led to consolidations and divestitures, including those between Ford and Land Rover; Jaguar and Volvo; Fiat and Chrysler; and General Motors and Opel, among others. Consistent with new trade theory, the requisite scale compels automakers to target world markets, where they can achieve economies of scale and maximize sales. The Industry in South Korea Despite its large size, the car market in South Korea (Korea) is insufficient to sustain indigenous automakers like Hyundai and Kia. Korea holds numerous competitive advantages in the car industry. The country is a world center of new technology development. Korea has abundant, cost-effective knowledge workers who drive innovations in design, features, production, and product quality. The country also has a high savings rate, with massive inward FDI, which ensures a ready supply of capital for carmakers to fund R&D and other ventures. Collectively, Korea’s abundance of production…

In 1999, when Ghosn took over as COO, the company, the previous year’s sales were around 550000 which was one of the lowest figures in 15 years. The company was in its worst phase in terms of profitability (based on Exhibit 3). He devised a revival plan based on an all round improvement in relation to the brand (renewing Nissan’s brand identity) and on delivering consistently at every customer touch-point (Purchase, Pre-purchase, Post-purchase). Nissan at that point of time was positioned as the third-choice Japanese brand behind Toyota and Honda. The successful launches of Nissan Maxima, Altima, and Xterra proved that their overall strategy at that point of time was working as planned, if not better.…
