Odysseus the Reluctant Warrior In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus, the main character and epic hero is a man who has been away from his wife and son for twenty years. Odysseus is reluctant in giving up on his journey to get back to his beloved wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. Odysseus goes into a great war called the Trojan War and he survives the whole war with a wonderful victory, hoping to see his wife and son in the future. Odysseus goes on a very painstaking and heart wrenching journey to get back to his wife and son. When Odysseus gets back to his palace he is faced with a huge problem, and that problem is one hundred eight suitors who want to marry his wife. Odysseus has to be reluctant and kill all of the suitors in his house, so he can claim what is rightfully his. Throughout the whole book The Odyssey, Odysseus is reluctant man on his journey getting back to his wife and son. Odysseus was a reluctant warrior who went to battle in the Trojan War. After a long fought war Odysseus was reluctant in his battling, and Odysseus came out victorious. The Trojan War was a treacherous war and if you wanted to survive you had to be smart, hard headed, and reluctant. Odysseus never wanted to go to war in the first place because he had to leave Penelope with their newborn son Telemachus. Odysseus’ family was his driving factor the whole time while he was at war to be reluctant in his journey because Odysseus loved Penelope and Telemachus. Odysseus never wanted to give up because he knew his wife and son were waiting for him at his home. Odysseus was reluctant from when he had to leave his beloved island, Ithaca, to when Odysseus was reluctant in dying in the Trojan War. After the long and dreadful Trojan War, Odysseus was washed up onto the island Ogigya, where the demi goddess Calypso looked after Odysseus. Odysseus washed up on Calypso’s island because Poseidon wrecked Odysseus’ ship on his journey home. Odysseus was still reluctant on giving up on his journey trying to get home to his loyal wife Penelope. Odysseus left Ogigya with a raft withed with wine, food and other goods but Poseidon wrecked his raft. After Odysseus’ journey to Ithaca he had to make many time consuming stops in hopes of getting help from others to get to his home. Odysseus was getting very sick and tired of his long journey and stops, but he was always reluctant in giving up and quitting because he knew his loyal wife and son were waiting for him. Odysseus was always reluctant in quitting his journey, but it paid off because he finally made it to his beautiful home. When Odysseus arrived in Ithaca, he had to hide his identity because he had to form a plan to kill the suitors and claim his rightful place next to Penelope. Odysseus had to contain himself and not reveal his true identity to the suitors because they instantly would’ve killed him. Odysseus was reluctant in revealing himself to his wife, the love of his life, and a woman who he had not seen in twenty years. Also, there were many times where Odysseus was reluctant in not killing some of the suitors, maids and servants when he saw them do hateful things to his name. Odysseus was reluctant many times in the book The Odyssey.
