Final Draft Standing there surrounded in the fluffy, white layer of snow, arms at my side, and legs frozen in excitement. My thick blue and gray sweatshirt clinging to my skin feeling as if it was a mere t-shirt, it felt like a little baby clinging to his mother. It had been a very relaxed, humorous and joyful night at the Everett mall theaters. We had just finished watching the movie Ride Along, featuring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. My friends and I were all stuffed up to our heads with popcorn, creamy butter, and different assortments of soda pops. In the cool, electrifying night air, the essence of popcorn was overwhelming where the group of friends stood chit-chatting in a circle. The pitter-patter of the snow was picking up at a breakneck pace. Despite all of this excitement, I only had one thought, to get to my Ithaca safe. To get home safe. As my friends and I all hopped into the black Honda Pilot that belonged to my companion Shubh’s father, we awaited that the sluggish and extremely slow ride to Shubh’s humble abode would soon be over. Due to the weather conditions, we could only go 40 miles per hour on the speedway. I was sitting in the middle seat of the middle row, squished between my brother Puneet, and coincidently between another young fellow also named Puneet. We were way too busy clicking pictures of the snowy wonderland that Everett Mall Way had become. Enjoying ourselves, we felt like Odysseys’ on the island of the lotus-eaters. We didn’t want to leave that place because of all of the amusement of the snow we had. Suddenly, the black SUV lurched to a quick stop, flinging everyone in the vehicle forward. We all soon discovered that the sudden stop was because a very numbskull young man had thought he was hilarious. We watched in frustration as he giggled by not being stunned at the slightest. He was a lucky man that our truck had 4 wheel drive, and that allowed him to get away for his mischief unharmed. Proceeding further

Cruthis recalls that as she was driving, “I felt the car skid a little bit, and then I lost control and I couldn’t turn the wheel.” She remembers that when the car started to swerve, “I tucked my feet under the seat because my dad told me never to hit the brakes in this situation. I tensed my arms up so I didn’t touch the wheel and cause any more damage than was about to happen.” The car began to spin in the opposite direction. “I spun about three times before it drove straight into a ravine. It (the car) flipped over once, and then all I remember was the car being at the bottom of the ravine, blood being everywhere, and my head out the window,” states Cruthis.…

I saw the blur of black before I heard the screech of my tires on the scorching summer concrete. The crunching sound of metal on metal rang through my ears. I felt the frigid cold of my dairy treat hit my bare legs. My body jerked as the car swerved towards the highway. 1 hour earlier, 9:00 pm on a mundane Friday night, I was lounging around with my closest friend when an idea popped into my mind. “We should go get Dairy Queen!” I suggested to Gracie, my weary friend next to me. She gave me a cheshire smile and we were off. Little did we know, things were about to head downhill. Literally.…

"It was raining, the camera bags were packed, and I had on the seat beside me in the car the results of my long trip, the box containing all those rolls and packs of exposed film ready to mail back to Washington. It was a time of relief. Sixty-five miles an hour for seven hours would get me home to my family that night, and my eyes were glued to the wet and gleaming highway that stretched out ahead. I felt freed, for I could lift my mind off my job and think of home.…

Emma’s day began like any other. She woke up in her college dorm room at The George Washington University covered in her down comforter and sheets, sunken into her tempurpedic mattress topper. Getting out of her warm bed and into the crisp cold air of the open dorm room air was tough. Winter in D.C. was turning out to be colder than she expected. She breathed in the fresh air before her, and walked to her Brita water filter to get herself a glass of water. While drinking the crystal clear water, Emma scrolled through her instagram feed and saw a picture that reminded her of her mom. She proceeded to give her mom a call. After she hung up the phone, Emma went to the bathroom and washed her hands, brushed her teeth, and used her favorite mouthwash.…

While they were heading “onto the dirt road” took the reader’s suspense to a certain extent. The car accident shocked all the readers and the family vacation turned into horror. But we still didn’t feel fear because no one is hurt, and the writer presented light humour in the story. The children June and John were in a “frenzy of delight” and disappointed that “Nobody’s killed” (pg 259).…

It’s a cold day in the middle of November. Rain and hail blistering down, some even the size of quarters. Sitting on the interstate in 4 lanes wide of bumper to bumper backed up traffic; although, the other side is backed up, it’s at least moving. Horns honking, people yelling obscenities - I look to my right and see a raccoon scurry past me searching for shelter. Yeah, traffic is that slow - I haven’t moved an inch in 15 minutes. As my eyes wander to the other side of the highway - I see a Dodge Caravan, motionless in the far right lane. Behind it stands a young woman talking on a cell phone - or should I say screaming. Distress overcomes her face.…

Everyone’s face shone with joy and the children shook their parent’s hands from side to side screaming happily. The sweet smell of fluffy cotton-candy tickled my nose as I entered the park. “Ooooh!Ahhhhh!” The cries of joy and sounds of machines whirring never seemed to stop. Even though there was lots of waiting with endless long lines, laughter was always in the air and they seemed happy together.…

After the toll had commanded over a little money from my father’s pocket, my father opened the car radio and started driving at a ridiculous speed. Sitting in the passenger seat of my boyfriend’s 2004 Buick, I watched the trees fly by swiftly on the other side of the glass window. I thumped my fingertips against the sturdy arm rest to ease some of my anticipation. I could feel us nearing our destination but it wasn’t coming fast enough. The narrow road we traveled on meandered around the rocky mountain and seemed to become thinner the further we traveled. I grabbed the map from the dusty dashboard and began to scan it with my eyes. I traced the slim line with my fingertip until my index finger rested atop of our destination. We were only about one mile from the cabin. Now my anticipation was stronger than ever.…

    The Business Man

The businessman, being late, glanced repeatedly at his watch. He stood nervously at the corner, beaten by the whip of an arctic blast, waiting, waiting for that stupid, incompetent bus driver, twelve minutes behind. A haggard, broken, old homeless man about ten paces away limped over, eyes fixed on the businessman at the corner, who by now was shivering, staring at and tapping on his watch. The old man, the bushy, dirty, old beggar, tapped the waiting passenger on the shoulder. The businessman, caught unaware, turned suddenly, and the two stood face-to-face. The beggar, surprised that he’d startled the man, stood there and looked at the other, speechless. The businessman stepped back and surveyed his face, taking in the cracks, the sullen eyes, the bits of something that were caught in the old man’s beard, and the snot around the nose. The old man lifted his hand, palms up, and started to say something, but he began to cough instead. Behind him, the businessman heard the roar of a big engine and the screech of brakes. He didn’t turn but remained in that position, just staring. A flake of snow dropped on the businessman’s face. It was cold. The door of the bus opened. The businessman turned and got on the step, but he stood there, looking back. The old man never moved. He whispered a half audible, “Please.” The businessman stepped down, walked over to the man, grabbed his filthy hand, and then threw an arm around his shoulder. They looked at each other, and a world of apathy and a world of bitterness dissolved in a matter of seconds. The younger said to the older, “Let’s go get something to…
