Observation: Cognitive Development In Children
When I first walk into the childcare they children was in circle time. I sat at a round table to watch how the children interact with the teacher. It was this one child who stood out to me, her name is DW she was sitting by herself as if she didn’t want to participate with the other children. The teacher would go sit by DW and talk to her to try to get her to interact with her peers. So as they transition from circle time to block area DW would go get the blocks off the shelf and pour them on the table. I notice another child trying to sit at the table with DW; she pushed the other child away. The teacher asked her “DW is you ok?” DW replied “NO I don’t want to play with her” I notice DW like to be by herself, the teacher would have one on …show more content…
DW is very shy and not very social, she prefer her own space. DW cognitive development skill consists of repeating alphabet in a song, watching videos, and listening and speaking sounds. My observations of this child could be of benefit if I were this child’s teacher because I can be able to get a fuller understanding of what the child’s learning and attention issues are and be able to help them in those areas. DW is doing much better; she’s interacting and socializing with her peers. DW has learned to share with the other children and made helper of the month. I want to be a positive influence in a child’s life, be able to support them academically, make an impact as well as open their eyes to all the possibilities that are out there. This assignment has modified my views on child development and teaching strategies by teaching children to be creative and confident thinkers. This learning experience would help me in my current or future work with children by providing insight on what children are learning. This experience will also help me understand the child’s attitude and the ability to teach them. Teach what interest the child, what they enjoy doing.     Creative development is important to a child’s learning because it helps them to use their mind and imagination and express their own ideas, and through playing with their friends it also helps them to understand that all family’s and cultures can be different. It helps them to make connections in their thinking and the way in which they problem solve, by doing things over and over again they reinforce their thinking and learning, they develop self-esteem, confidence, imagination & learning to work together in groups. It puts down the foundations for more complex learning.     This case study focuses on Alphonso Young, a 4 –year-old head start student and on Mr. & Mrs. Young, Alphonso’s parents, Susan Cross, Head Start teacher, Rory Johnson, 4-year-old Head Start student and Marsha Matchwick, school psychologist, DCSD. Main Key Factors in this case study are dealing with a 4 year child who has and attention deficit disorder. When he plays with other kids in the school, he tends to break things, take toys and other children do not want to play with him because they say that “he doesn’t play right”. He seems to spend most of his time wondering around the classroom, and he has difficulty sitting down during circle time. Alphonso also seems genuinely sorry when he doesn’t follow the rules; however, he repeats the behavior again just as if he never apologized or has not remembered doing something bad or misbehaving before. Alphonso has all of the appropriate age skills, as a matter of fact, his fine and gross motor skills are better than most children in his class. After Ms. Cross with Mrs. Young’s permission had asked a school psychologist to observe Alphonso and interview his mom, school psychologist have come to find out that Alphonso can also be a difficult child at home, and he quickly losses interest in playing with his toys. He doesn’t play well with his other siblings, and he often gets mad at his baby sister when she cries. However, when Alphonso settles down his is a very loving boy, he loves stuffed animals and he snuggles with his bear toy at night. However, Alphonso’s aunt doesn’t invite him to her house anymore because she says that he gets so excited that he just runs through their home, jumps on furniture, and disrupts everything.     As we go along, time goes very quickly; yesterday was my 3 day at my work practice. Basically children have very similar structure. I will not be talking in details, because most of the thing will be pretty much the same as last my 2 times above. Yesterday we had really full group. Between 9.30 and 10a.m children had their free play time. All of them were playing with blocks but different styles. At 10a.m children had breakfast time. They finished around 10.30. After that we had circle time. Children were introduced 2 new letters “r” and “m”. We repeated the letters what children already know. At 11 we did playdough with children. At 11.40 we brought children for little walk in the crèche garden. At 12p.m they had snack time. While the part time children were collecting by parents, the full time were staying and we were waiting for the afternoon group, I read stories to them and teach them a song about Halloween. At 2p.m children had the meal time. I left at 2.30p.m. For the first time I saw a little boy in the group. The group teacher said the parents bring him maybe once a week or so. The boy did not want to stay at all. He was all the time holding his dad and crying. I have to admit the boy do not has any English. The teacher asked dad to stay. While dad was there, the little boy was ok, but if dad tried to go he was in hysteric again. Every teacher in turn tried to talk to him, nothing helped. I brought my own story book from home, so I took this book, I sat down with that boy and started to show him pictures. He was ok. I asked him to go with me to the toilet to wipe his nose. When we came back, his dad was gone. He started crying straight away. He rang to the door, trying to open it. Then he was jumping and banning the door, throwing things. When the group teacher wanted to talk to him, it made it worse. Then another teacher was talking to him. We ended up that he started biting, pinching, pushing and throwing thing at us.
