“More than one-third (36.5%) of U.S adults have obesity” (“Center” Internet). “At least thirty million people of all ages suffer from an eating disorder. Every sixty-two minutes at least one person dies as a direct result from an eating disorder”. As Americans, our nation suffer from many health issues related to food. America is high in obesity and eating disorders. Due to media and peer pressure, many people wants to have the “perfect” image. Fast food restaurants and media influence adults and young children to eat unhealthy food.…
The only entity fast food restaurants desire is money. They do not care about health, weight, or medical problems. Fast food is everywhere, also “ there are more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America. More than fifty million customers are served per day” (Zinczenko 464). These statistics are outrageous and embarrassing for Americans. The food these companies produce is horrible in nutrition and damaging for one’s health. Even though fast food is tempting, one should stay far away from it as possible. In David Zinczenko article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” he has his own personal experience as an example for people, specifically teenagers, to stay away from fast food. Although fast food produces delicious products, these products contain blinding nutrition facts, and the companies mainly target teenagers.…
In today’s America we as citizens are faced with the ongoing crutch known as obesity. Obesity is defined as a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent of major health issues. I view obesity as a “crutch” because it is disease that will slow the American populous down. The topic on obesity has been debated over many years as to who would take the blame of America’s overweight problem and what that individual or group would do to prevent it. Many different state legislatures and school board committees have started to ban vending machines in school grounds. “Congress has considered a menu-labeling legislation that would force chain restaurants to list fat, sodium, and calories for each item” (Balko, 2004, p.522). Many individuals like me believe that this is definitely the most improper approach to preventing the obesity epidemic that has plagued the United States over the last twenty years. It is not the United State government’s place to tell American citizens what they can or cannot consume. Obesity has become more and more of a problem because American citizens are executing poor dietary techniques. The next influential factor to obesity is the influence of our biological need and genetics. These factors play a large part in the obesity epidemic but the key factor to obesity is the fact that Americans are drastically decreasing their urges for physical fitness and health. Data has…
The United States is facing a growing epidemic of obesity. Obesity affects individuals of any age, gender, or nationality. Diseases increased by obesity are increasing at alarming rates in children and adults. It is thought that children suffering from obesity will not live as long as their parents. Along with health risks in children they have to endure ridicule and teasing from other children at school resulting in psychological problems that can follow them into adulthood (Neighmond, 2010). Americans have a fascination with fast food and consuming too much food in one meal…
As humans we all have certain motivations behind every action that we exhibit. This is called a hierarchy of needs, and in 1943 a scientist by the name of Abraham Maslow theorized it. When he discovered this characteristic of the human body, he came out with an organized chart, or pyramid. His pyramid showed five different levels, Basic needs, Safety, Love and Belonging, Self esteem, and Self-Actualization. Basically he created a blueprint for life. First you have to lay your foundation with your basic needs, then when you have those you add on safety and so on and son, until you get to Self-Actualization. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ve made it. But it is also saying that life is life and you can not do anything about that. Like in August Wilson’s play Fences when he says “You got to take the crooked with the straights” he is saying that in life, not only do you have to deal with and learn the easy stuff, but you also have to adjust and learn the hard things.…
Yet this obsession with obese Americans is about more than body fat. Certainly there is a debate to be had about the extent to which obesity is a problem in America - a discussion best left to medical experts. But a close examination of the popular genre on obesity reveals it is about more than consumption in the most literal sense of eating food. Obesity has become a metaphor for 'over-consumption' more generally. Affluence is blamed not just for bloated bodies, but for a society which is seen as more generally too big for its own good.…

In addition, by promoting obesity as a major public health concern, more people are aware that obesity in the United States is a problem that needs to be address to show that obesity can cause major problem in their health. For example, by being more aware about the effects of overweight on health can cause a support of healthy eating and in physical activity. In the article of the mental Health Weekly Digest, it stated “...encouraging them to watch less TV can save…
They do less physical activities each day than any other nations. We drive more and walk less than other people. Exercise is key to good health and an essential tool in the fight against obesity, but new numbers suggest that many Americans don't get any physical activity at all. Studies by the CDC have shown that 2 out of 10 Americans get the recommended amount of exercise.…
In todays’ society, especially in America, obesity has become an epidemic of all sorts. In every state in the U.S., at least 20% of the population is obese. More and more people are dying due to heart related problems, and more people are becoming ok with being “big boned”. This is a huge problem for all of America and is becoming increasingly worse.…
Have you ever stood in front of a refrigerator that holds a slice of cake or a tub of ice-cream and your hand reaches out to get it even as your mind is screaming, "Don’t do this"! Although millions of Americans are overweight, eating a healthy diet will eliminate the obesity problem in America. Eating poorly or well can make a big difference on both the physical and mental aspects of your body. All in all, understanding what causes food cravings and learning to control them, as well as learning how to lose weight by means of a healthy diet can help anyone avoid becoming obese. Therefore, the result of choosing healthier foods will decrease the obesity rate and ultimately increase the rate of people who will have less medical expenses and be able to maintain a more active lifestyle.…
Obesity is a trending topic in America affecting every state, every city and every community across our beautiful country. Obesity is a defeat to our nation becoming the fastest growing cause of disease and death in America. This new wave of obesity is hitting us where it hurts and spreading its grip on our homeland. Obesity is becoming a modern day murderer and the fact that this phenomena is completely preventable is mind boggling. American citizens are becoming blind to false impressions on labels, in the media and in advertising tricks that glorifies fast food in a positive light. We as American’s need to combat obesity by dieting, exercising and even taking legal action is…
Obesity in America is not new and in many cases, obesity tends to strike younger aged children. Obesity among young children often starts from unhealthy eating habits. What parents put on their children’s plate is significant and essential to their health. It is important to develop healthy eating habits when a child is young so that those skills can stick with them throughout their lifetime. Unfortunately, obesity in America is out of hand and the problem is only getting worse. There are health issues associated with obesity such as cancer, heart disease, and even diabetes. It is important to stop the problem while people are young so that these health risks are limited and not life threatening. For many years, schools have been trying to…
One in every three children in the United States is overweight or obese. (Solving Obesity 3) Childhood obesity has always been a problem in the United States, and continues to be a factor in the lives of many young children. This happens in many other countries around the world, but tends to be much more prominent inside the United States. The growing obesity in children is posing serious problems to their health, and will affect them for the rest of their lives. This leads to having one third of all children be predicted to develop diabetes in their lifetime. (Solving Obesity 3) This problem could no longer be ignored, it is ruining the lives of americas children and…
Obesity in America is an ever-growing problem each day. As of 2011, The United States of America has the highest obesity rate of any other country of the world. What is obesity? Obesity is defined as “a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body” (Webster). Excess obesity usually begins to have negative affects on the body and often causes health complications. The obesity rate in America has been on the rise for many years and will continue to only get worse if Americans do not take action immediately. Jeff Levi, Ph.D., executive director of TFAH said “Today, the state with the lowest obesity rate would have had the highest rate in 1995.” This is a fact that is not easy to hear and even harder to disprove (Levi). Based on polls taken in 2008, more than 50% of 4,000 people that took part in a poll said that they would give up a year of their lives if it meant they would no longer be obese. The same poll also gathered researched that shows the increasing weight of passengers on planes. Airlines have had to spend almost three hundred million on extra fuel to compensate for the massive growth in weight and size of passengers (Heather).…
