Nuclear Terrorism
At this time in our world we live in I do believe nuclear terrorism is a huge threat and the U.S. should be very concerned about it. It was noted by Jeffrey T. Richelson that “declassified documents have confirmed that the U.S. (and other) governments have anticipated the possibility of a terrorist nuclear incident at such high-profile events as the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics” (Richelson 2012). United States government officials have been concerned with the possibility of a terrorist attack since the attacks on the world trade center in 2001. Another concern of the United States is the possibility of nuclear capable Iran might produce either weapons, weapons-grade material for dirty bombs, or supply technical knowledge to its Shi'a allies in Hezbollah. It was recently reported by CNN news center that a terrorist attack in Canada had been stopped and the cell came from Iran who was secretly harboring members of Al Qaida. I do not believe these types of countries should have nuclear capabilities. Another concern is the possibilities of nuclear materials being stolen and not being able to track them down.
Under the freedom of information act there have been over 40 documents have been posted by the National Security Archive that contain information on the concerns of a possible Nuclear Terrorist attack on American Soil. Within the Archives there is also documentation of earlier investigations that include details of a possible clandestine nuclear attack. Other information within the documentation is some of Al Qaeda’s top leaders requesting nuclear material. I do not believe the threat is exaggerated, I believe the threat is very real. The documents were obtained through the Department of Energy, the CIA, Defense Intelligence Agency, and the Department of Defense.
Here in the United States we are not only concerned about nuclear terrorism; we are also concerned about nuclear security. There are a few organizations

Despite the fall of the Soviet Union 19 years ago in 1991, the issue of nuclear arms, besides terrorism, remains one of the chief security concerns in the contemporary world. Accordingly, the following issues concerning nuclear arms remained unresolved security concerns.Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These events not only brought about the surrender of the Japan and an end to World War II, but they also helped shaped the nature of international politics for the next six decades. The atomic bomb is the crudest form of a series of powerful nuclear weapons to be eventually developed and come into existence. Both superpowers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union, eventually built massive stockpiles of nuclear weapons during the Cold War. This escalation of nuclear arms possession led to…

In addition to the reduction in weapons, the number of countries which were developing, had developed or were seriously discussing nuclear programs has dropped since the 1980’s. This was due to a combination of factors that still determine such decisions today, including security, expense, need for status or prestige, internal politics and other factors.…

Nuclear powers biggest threat is from the public’s perception of it. As seen in Germany as well as throughout Europe, if the public deems something too unsafe and does not want to live near it, the governments will have no choice but to shut down the plants and look for different sources of energy. Compared to biofuels and solar power, nuclear power is already extremely established and generates a large share of the worlds’ power, and faces most of its issues in the political realm instead of the practical…

I agree with the nuclear optimists that nuclear proliferation will make international politics more stable and less war prone. Since nuclear weapons are classified as weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), more specifically as true WMD (Baylis pg 386), I believe states that possess nuclear weapons will be reluctant to use them against states who also possess nuclear weapons, out of the fear those state will retaliate with their own nuclear weapons. The use of nuclear weapons poses risk to a state that chooses to use a nuclear weapon against another nuclear proliferated state. Therefore, by this logic it benefits to a state to be nuclear proliferated as a defensive precaution or a deterrence mechanism.…

According to various online historical articles written by the history.com staff the U.S has been associated with over 230 wars since the beggining of the thirteen colonies. As the definition of “again” has inflicted, in order to make America great again we would have to return to a word of war.. With America’s past history of 239 war, another myriad of wars can be added to this list. The infamous politician, Donald J. Trump has threatened various countries as well as groups of people. He has been noted to have had said, “The United States should not try so hard to stop nuclear proliferation.” (the washington post.com) Trump had declared, “proliferation is going to happen anyway… If Japan had that nuclear war threat, I’m not sure that would be a bad thing for us. Nor would it be so bad, if South Korea and Saudi Arabia had nuclear weapons too.” The stress on anti- proliferation movements is a pathway carved for nuclear war. We would not only be returning to a world of war, but one of nuclear…

If some other country was to obtain these weapons and we had none, we would be at their mercy. There are a lot of maniacs out there who have the ability to rise to power and gain support, just like Hitler, Stalin, or Mussolini did. Once these kinds of leaders gain power, they can obtain nuclear weapons. Even though none of them did, they had the power to, and the only reason they didn’t is because they didn’t live in the nuclear age. However, we were still watching these leaders to make sure they weren’t making weapons of mass destruction. This proved to be a waste of time because they never did, but even while we were watching them, Hitler was still able to create more innovative and useful weapons that he…

Comparing the threat nuclear war to the threat of terrorism today is different in many was in that terrorism has many different faces. Today’s terrorism comes not only from other countries but also comes from within the U.S. from some of our own people. Like the students of World War II, the students of today are still being taught to duck and cover, not for the fear of a boom but for the fear of a fellow student are someone with a cause, coming into the class and shooting it up. Technology has grown so much society of today really has no fear from other countries but more from the terrorism within the U.S... For some children of today duck and cover is practice in their own homes trying to stay safe from the threat, right outside of their own front…

I believe that the biggest problem with nuclear weapons and the public is the fear factor also. As we look back at the different wars fought there was only two nuclear bombs that were dropped. If you listen to conversations today you would believe that they had been used in every major war. According to Mauroni "there has been no public confirmation that a terrorist group has ever obtained, is about to get, or currently has a nuclear weapon, anxieties over that end-state have been converted into conclusions"(2012, p 10). I can understand wanting to have the same power as another country but I think that is where things get tricky. Look at the fact of gun control in America today. I have plenty of guns and I have always had access to them…

In 1945, the two superpowers--the United States and the USSR--became enemies because their beliefs and objectives were completely at odds, this was known as the Cold War. An aspect of the Cold War was the race for nuclear superiority. As tension grew between the USSR and America, Americans were engulfed in great anxiety and fear towards the atomic bomb. During the atomic era and since then, the atomic bomb had predominantly been portrayed as the cause of great fear and anxiety.…

Evidence does exist that terrorist cells, such as Al-Qaeda, is constantly pursuing a nuclear capability. Whether that capability is acquisition or production is not necessarily certain, but the sources, as shown by the mishandling of HEU in some countries, are out there. Potential sources of nuclear weapons, like Russia and Pakistan, also present a concern due to their ample supply of tactical nuclear weapons which, by comparison of high yield bombs, have low security measures (Oppenheimer 2005,…

The threat of nuclear war and the threat of terrorism have some similarities as well as differences. The similarities would be that someone could end your life or your family life without you knowing when and where. Both nuclear war and terrorism has the threat of harming innocent civilians who most likely don't have anything to do with the conflict that is going on. The differences would be the threat of a nuclear war could only come from another country. These days the threat of terrorism to me is a much more real and present danger. Today anyone can be a terrorist. Today anyone can build a bomb in their basement with the help of the internet. This man made bomb that can easily be assembled is then taken into your local mall or at a very public place like we saw in the Boston Marathon Bombings. There is no face to terrorism these days and he or she has to take precautions and be aware of their surroundings.…

Living under the threat of nuclear war and living under the threat of terrorism have a lot in common. Terrorism defines many different situations, such as 9/11, a shooter entering a public place, poison being put into our air or drinking water, etc. The fear is the same, we are afraid that a situation could occur that could harm, or even kill, us or our loved ones, and there is nothing we can do to prevent it. Just like schools were teaching students what to do in case of a nuclear bomb during the Cold War, schools are now teaching students what to do in case of a terrorist attack. Since the shooting at the elementary school Connecticut, schools all over the country have been teaching the students what to do and how to handle the situation. I believe that this is a very positive thing. School shootings seem to be happening…
