Nt1310 Unit 7 Layers Analysis
The 7 layers can be split logically into two subgroups. Layers 7 thru 4 focus on the end to end communication of data source and destinations. Layers 3 thru 1 are provide consistent communication between the network devices. An easier way of looking at the OSI model is dividing the upper layers (7, 6, 5) from the lower layers (4, 3, 2, 1). The upper layers deal with application issues and are implemented only in software. The highest layer, the application layer, is the closest to the end user. The lower layers are responsible for the transportation of the data. The physical layer and the data link layer are implemented in hardware and software. The lowest layer, the physical layer, is closest to the physical network medium (the wires, for example) and is responsible for placing data on the medium.

At the destination this layer is responsible for combining the packets into their original state. This layer also checks to see if the layers are in the right order when received and not in duplicated form. If there is an error in one of the packets there is a request for that packet's retransmission. There are two protocols that sit at this layer. First, the TCP protocol connects the sender and the receiver using a socket which is determined by the IP address and port number. TCP keeps track of the packet delivery order and which ones need to be resent. UDP on the other hand is a connectionless communication and does not guarantee packet delivery between sender and receiver. Because it is connectionless the sender sends the data into the network with an IP address of the receiver and hopes it makes it to its destination. Since there is not a way of asking the sender to retransmit because of an error there is little error protection if

Studying the seven layers of the OSI design, a decision to be taken is that the layer three, also referred to as the network layer is the one which WAN protocols operates on. The network layer carries out regular tasks as well as pinpoints end-to-end addressing and routing datagrams (Regan, 2004). There exists a unit known as brouter that some layers incorporate which works like a router and a bridge. Routers and switches work on layers 2-4 (data link layer, network layer as well as transport layer). As mentioned earlier, on layer two of the OSI model, network layer, is the place where the addressing and routing is carried out. On the transport layer of the OSI model is the place where the flow control and mistake handling works. Lastly, on layer four the synchronizations and assemblies are completed.…

The second layer of the OSI model is the data link layer. This is the layer that transports the data between network nodes in a wide area network (WAN) or on the same local area network (LAN) between nodes. The data link layer makes available the procedural and functional means to move data between network devices and could provide the measures to find and possibly correct errors that may occur in the physical layer. The security vulnerabilities associated with the data link layer are:…

UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is a datagram service, designed to carry small messages between applications with as little overhead as possible. The only information carried in the UDP header is for the source and destination port numbers, the length of the datagram and a checksum. UDP makes no guarantees about whether the data will arrive, how quickly it will arrive, or whether it will arrive in any particular order. It is called a pass-through protocol because it does nothing other than pass the data it is given. It is used for audio, video, and other real-time data because of the lack of overhead and because packets missed in such data flows must be ignored anyway.…

The difference between the OSI and the TCP/IP mode is that the OSI model has more steps which it has Presentation and session. Presentation is the step that presentation of the app that you run on your computer. Session is the step that let you use the app for a long time it saves your session. All the other steps for both are the application which it the physical app that you click on and it helps you use the app. Transport is the step that let you transfer data from point to point. The next step is Network which is responsible for addressing and controls the routing. The other step is what it does is that it is responsible for transition and establishes logical connections. The next is physical layer at it stream over physical media.…

The first/lowest layer is Physical Layer. The physical layer is what the name implies, i.e. physical components of a network. This layer is concerned with transmission and reception of unstructured raw data over physical medium. The function of physical layer is to take binary information from higher layers, translate it into transmission signal, transmit the information across transmission medium, receive this…
