Our stimulus for Unit 1, From Page to Stage: is ‘Our Day Out’ by playwright Willy Russell. We are using the straight version published in 1987 for our stimulus. In the play ‘Our Day Out’ I will be playing Mrs Kay and David will be playing Mr Briggs. We have kept Mrs Kay and Mr Briggs the same gender as Russell intended because Russell’s states that the reason Mrs Kay seems liberal is partly due to her gender – this then contrasts to Briggs’ stern male figure. We have Henry multi-rolling as the driver and Colin, Olivia multi rolling as Headmistress and Carol, Alana multi-rolling as Andrews and Karen and Max take on all the Kid lines as Maurice. In the play Mrs Kay's character hasn't been developed in a way that implies I have to play her in a certain way, so this gives me the opportunity to develop the character. I did that in a variety of different ways. One of them being the 'hot seat' activity. This activity allowed me to connect with the character in a way that meant I could round her, give her some history and meaning to her friendly and understanding attitude towards the children. This then gave me the opportunity to write a character profile for her, explaining in depth why she is like she is. We also completed an exercise in which we devised a scene of Mrs Kay in her childhood and showed the way it links to her currant life now. Our group made a piece highlighting the fact that Mrs Kay is continually told she will never become anything when she is older, causing her to prioritise fun over learning, causing her to have low attainment and lack of belief in the children. This supports Russell's intentions stated near the end of the play. 'Most of them were rejects the day they were born'.…

    1. In different cultures, people have different traditions. Most of which seem pretty harmless, unless a virus is introduced amongst the population. In the film, the Ebola virus was spread unintentional in 3 main ways: handshaking, burial rituals, and selling and eating infected animal meat. When people greet each other in Zaire, a handshake is usually the method that is used. However with the Ebola outbreak, handshaking spread the virus too easily amongst the community. It is also custom to have a special burial ritual for those who die. In this ritual, a lot of people tend to touch the dead corpse exposing everyone to the virus. Since the virus was originally hosted in fruit bats and was then passed on to chimpanzees, gorillas, antelope, and even porcupines. Many of the meat in Zaire is hunted down, most the meet they eat are gorillas and bat meat, spreading the virus even more.…

Did you know that the American Industrial Revolution started in England? Interesting, right? Before the revolution started, life consisted of hard labor because everything was done by hand. As the revolution progressed, people started to use machines to do their work. Like every revolution there are some pros and cons about the results of the American Industrial Revolution. This revolution was worthwhile because inventions like the cotton gin and the inventions of other machines sparked the start of machine work, but in able to have machines you have to buy them which was very expensive.…

Sarah Banks (2001) defines social work values as: “a set of fundamental moral/ethical principles to which social workers are/should be committed.”(Banks, 2001, p. 6). Social work adheres to high principles and standards of the General Social Care Council (GSCC) codes and ethics while recognizing, respecting and applying relevant legislation. Reading Li Yu is an experience full of wonders. Not that his works are uncommonly amusing and entertaining for my stereotype of classical Chinese literature; I do enjoy his relatively independent literary approach—however mundane and vulgar it is said to be—from the orthodox literature tradition of his time (Zhang et al., 2008: 2), but it is the less independent part of him that I find most intriguing: that marriages are for the parents to decide, that love is contingent on appearance and , that love does not need to be exclusive, etc. All these values he has taken for granted without questioning are simply mind blowing for readers of today.…

The first soliloquy of Hamlet falls in the Act 1, Scene II, after the King Claudius and the Queen Gertrude urges Hamlet in the open court to cast off the deep melancholy which, as they think, has taken possession of his mind as a consequence of his father’s death. In their opinion, Hamlet has sufficiently grieved for his father’s death already. Prior to the soliloquy, the King Claudius and Queen Gertrude makes announcement to their marriage, as according to them, the court could not afford excessive grief, which further saddens Hamlet.…

The beginning of the book, Nelson Mandela and Apartheid in World History (2001) Ann Graham Gaines, tells us Mandela's personal story with a summary of early South African history and the rise and fall of apartheid. Gaines starts off by telling us how Mandela and F.W. de Klerk had made headlines in the newspapers all around the world; they both accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. Gaines writes this piece in order to show how life was during the Apartheid. Her audience appears to be anyone who cares or wants to know what happened during the Apartheid.…
