Northrop Grumman Ethical Issues
These policies are a source of pride for Northrop Grumman. In fact, as they prepared to move its headquarters from Los Angeles to the east coast in 2010, controversy arose around the state of choice. Wes Bush, CEO of the company, publicly declared that despite the state of Virginia’s “recent ruling against the extension of anti-discrimination protections to gays and lesbians,” he was not concerned that Northrop Grumman would have issues fully implementing their “pioneering anti-discrimination internal policies” (Benton, 2010).

On September 2011, the EEOC filed a federal lawsuit against the Missouri-based shop in Houston federal court claiming that Bass Pro Shops knowingly and systematically discriminated against Hispanics and Black applicants in hiring and that some of the mangers used racial slurs (Forsyth, 2011). Not only is this lawsuit claiming that Bass Pro Shop has been discriminating in their hiring since 2005, it also states that Bass Pro unlawfully destroyed or failed to keep records and documents related to employment applications and internal discrimination complaints (Bass Pro Failed, 2011).…

Theoretically, the utilitarian theory of ethics states that action should be viewed as good or bad based on the number of people deriving pleasure from it. Provided it is the majority of the people deriving pleasure then the act is good. Therefore, the board should have educated the players on the wrongful aspect of the sale of the memorabilia based on this theory (Kelly, 2012).…

Before one can understand the modern scope of sexual orientation as viewed through the law, they must understand the evolvement of laws over the past few decades. In the late 1950s, the debate regarding sexual orientation gained traction in America due to a case involving Frank Kameny. Kameny was fired on the basis of being a gay man, and the Supreme Court rejected his request for a hearing. As a result, demonstrations in support of Kameny began to blossom across the country. In 1975, the Civil Service Commission reversed its policy against gays as a result, and hence a long struggle for equality began (Bauer & Kleiner, 2001).…

Since 1975, Congress has considered amending Title VII to include a ban on employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Most of the first employment discrimination cases brought by transgenders were dismissed because there is no federal law designating transgender as a protected class, or specifically requiring equal treatment for transgendered people. Until recently, Title VII’s lack of legislative history and failed attempts by Congress to introduce or pass gender identity employment discrimination legislation left courts with little reason to deviate from precedent.…

One case that relates to our industry, is when a transgender man K.S, who works at a resort spa as a massage therapist who is in the middle of transitioning from male to female, was requested by his employer to massage a client who requested for male massage therapist. K.S, has reluctantly asked his employer for a new name tag (male to female). But, his employer denied K.S with a new name tag unless K.S obtained a court order name change or gender change on his driver’s license. Under K.S’ rights under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which made it illegal to discriminate based on gender. According to Transgender Law Center Staff Attorney Matt Wood, “Cases like this one are becoming increasingly common and show the significance of TLC’s recent victory in the Macy v. Holder EEOC decision. K.S. lives in a state where there is no explicit state law prohibiting gender identity discrimination in employment. Because of Macy, K.S. was able to show his employer that federal law protects transgender workers and prohibits the company from treating him differently than other men in his workplace. I’m proud we were able to help empower K.S. as well as the more than 2,000 transgender and gender non-conforming people who contact our legal helpline every…

The Government imposes a variety of socio-economic programs on its contractors as part of long-standing federal efforts to further affirmative action through federal contracting. Affirmative action regulations apply not only to minorities and women but to handicapped individuals, special disabled veterans, and veterans of the Vietnam era (FAR 52.22-35 and -36). For almost fifty years Former President Lyndon B. Johnson’s answer to “balance the opportunities” for minorities and women, affirmative action has attempted to eradicate America’s historical discrimination against minorities, women and individuals with disabilities. Affirmative action began as a plan to enable the disadvantaged and the disenfranchised (minorities, women and disabled individuals) with the same opportunities given to their white male counterparts with regard to education, employment and contracting. Executive Order 11246 was conceived during the civil rights era, born as the civil rights act of 1964, and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Affirmative action and procurement will be discussed as separates before demonstrating the symbiotic relationship of these two entities via the organization which administers and enforces the federally mandated contracting and affirmative action policy. Therefore, the intent of this paper is to provide information regarding affirmative action, its role in the procurement process and illustrate how the federal government enforces affirmative action through procurement/contracting.…

    Homophobia at Work

"The social organization of work is the set of relations among people at work" and within any organization, gay and lesbian people account for approximately 10 percent of the workforce (Hodson & Sullivan, 2002, p. 4). "Unlike most other minority groups, however, homosexuals are not readily visible, and many have chosen to remain invisible, especially at work, because they fear the negative consequences that might result from revealing their sexual orientation" (Hunt, 1995, p. 149). For gays and lesbians coming out is not worth risking exclusion, career damage, or even being the butt of jokes and anti-gay remarks. Along with this fear there are also the added obstacles of homophobia in the workplace, which most managers and human resource professionals know little about. The reason that they know little is because gay and lesbian people, as well as most forms of discrimination against them, are invisible. It is this invisibility, which is at the heart of the problem, and which causes most managers to assume that sexual orientation is not an issue in their organization.…
