Nonprofit Organization
Creating a Nonprofit Organization is a difficult task in its self, but adding in political battles along the way causes even more stress and difficulty to the organization. The Love Canal Homeowners Association later called the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice, experienced many complications with their political battle with the government over the chemical waste buried in the Love Canal (Gibbs, “History: Love Canal: The Start of a Movement”). Although at the time the Love Canal Homeowners Association was not official a nonprofit during this specific political battle, they still functioned just like one (“Story”). Their goal was like many nonprofits: wanting a change in policy and government action (“About Us”). The Love Canal Homeowners …show more content…
First, they could have been more organized. With an organization that is just beginning, the leadership and goals can get lost in the grand scheme of things. Nonprofits should have an organizational way to accomplish their goals to help their goals succeed and in an effective and efficient way. Secondly, organizations working towards environmental agendas should find a way to have an expert join in on the political battle. When organizations have experts on their side, they almost have a leg up on the government. If these organizations have tests done (which this could possibly cause an issue, because of limited amount of funds), they will be able to submit official documents to the government to show their research. Lastly, media relations are a large part of political battles. If nonprofit organizations want to have other people hear their story, they need to go to the media and show the country first hand what they are dealing with. With this, the nonprofits will “kill two birds with one stone”: first they would be getting the word out to others in the country and secondly, they would be getting the government’s attention with the news but out by the media.
