No Talking Summary

Before Dave challenged Lynsey to the no talking contest in the book No Talking, the fifth grades would talk really loud. The principal, Mrs. Hiatt, would yell "STUDENTS, YOU ARE TALKING TOO LOUD!" at the fifth graders through her bullhorn during their lunchtime.

The fifth graders were a lot quieter after Dave challenged Lynsey to the "no talking contest". They didn't talk at all when they were outside of school. When they were in school, they only spoke three words at a time to answer a teacher.
