Nikki Giovani Comparing Poems

Reading Ms. Smith

Nikki Giovanni uses good choice of words and figurative language to put the reader in a vivid world. She uses vivid verbs, personification, and other elements to really give the right picture in your mind. Her method works because the readers get hooked onto the poem and want to read it. One of my favorite poems is “poetry.” Poetry is a poem about poets using poetry to express themselves and not to impress anybody. She uses metaphors to show what poetry is, she says “A poem is pure energy.” These types of metaphors help the reader picture what the poems trying to say. She also uses personification to also have a better understanding. Another one of Nikki Giovanni’s poems is “women.” I think that this poem talks about a woman who has been rejected. She uses metaphors to express how she feels. She says “I am glass” to say she is transparent. Nikki Giovanni uses metaphors and simile in both poems. She uses these so that readers will understand the poem better. This is a good way to get readers interested. She also uses other elements like repetition to emphasize it like when she repeats “I am glass I am glass.” In the poems “women” and “poetry” by Nikki Giovanni she uses different elements to express what she is trying to express. We talked about two metaphor and simile. The way she uses the different elements really goes along with the poems. It goes really well because it gives the readers pictures of what the poet is trying to express. This is why Nikki Giovanni’s method works good in

Two examples of imagery Lauinger wrote were line five, “I’d light your Camels, pour your Jack;” and line three, “When you got up to scramble eggs.” The imagery in these lines and the others help the poem come to life off of the page. Another element that helps the poem come alive is figurative language. One example of figurative language is the hyperbole in lines 17 and 18, “You’re in it, doll, up to your eyeballs! Tears? Please! You’ll dilute our highballs,” An additional example of figurative language lies in line 15, “You didn’t know the pearls were fake …,” which I feel is a metaphor for the fake relationship that she is in and always relies on for her scams. The last element that brings this poem to life is sound. The poem has an example of onomatopoeia in line 24 using the word buzz to denote the sound of a telephone ringing. The poem also has examples of alliteration in line 12, “And bitter with the bittersweet,” and line 16, “Make no mistake.” The poem “Marvell Noir” is an end rhyme as the last syllable in each couplet rhyme. The rhyme scheme for this poem is aabbccddeeff…rr.. Out of all the poems I read in the poetry unit “Marvell Noir” by Ann Lauinger was one of my…

In poem the imagery job was to put reader in the shoe of the young white narrator. Imagery allowed reader to come to a conclusion of why would narrator think like she did. An example of this were in line nine through ten, where narrator claimed that IQ the African American man had a casual, cold, alertness in his eye as if he planned to may her. Another examples is line twenty six through thirty one, as she explained how man can break her back like a stick maybe for vengeance on people that are breaking his.…

Last I would like to say about Nikki Giovanni’s poems and how she expresses herself in them is that,a poem that she writes has to have meaning altho ugly because of how bad it may turn out. Yet just so boring and she states this in the poem of lines 5-6 “beautiful, ugly, blandly” and if that's not what she is referring to than she could just be talking about herself. This poem could mean many things (The Beep-Beep Poem) like she could be in her car driving thinking out loud because she may be going through lots of stress… this all I could say about Nikki…

Nikki Giovanni was an African American poet, author, professor, and civil rights activist. She has won over 62 awards for her poetry, books, records, tapes, and CDs including seven NAACP image awards, the Langston Hughes award, and the Gwendolyn Brooks award (Giovanni, “Awards and Honors”). Nikki Giovanni was born on June 7, 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, but was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio (Aybar, “Nikki Giovanni”). She would often visit her grandparents, who lived in Knoxville, and they influenced her work greatly by teaching her from a young age to fight injustice (Aybar, “Nikki Giovanni”). Although the majority of Giovanni’s works were written with a militant tone, “Winter Poem” uses nature to express the same ideas she writes about in her other works.…

One enjoyable aspect of the techniques that Edwin uses and also his use of imagery. Firstly he sets the scene immediately using a metaphor ‘ragged diamond of shattered plate glass’. This has a very effective impact on the poem because it compares the sharp shards of glass to an uncut diamond that is shimmering. The reader dose not know how this has happened however we are told that ‘a young man and his girl are falling backwards into a shop window’. This shocks and surprises me with images and makes me want to read on.…

I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these writing styles and the interpretive challenges they present. To begin with, I will argue the strengths and weaknesses of philosophical ideas being presented in a poem. Many poems often rhyme and are the author writes it to be interpreted in a collection of ways. This can be both good and bad.…

She uses conventional stanzas (rhymed iambic lines); each ends with couplet, as if to conclude argument. Poem moves from series of observations to a clear conclusion. This structure is especially effective as it is simple and easy to follow, while drawing your attention to the text which has shocking visual imagery.…

    My Writing Style

Free verse poetry uses rhythm, word choice, imagery and other devices to reflect the subject of the poem with a unique style. The aesthetic of Hopkins’ writing is not the only influence to my writing, the content in her stories is also very well thought out and interesting. After reading many of her books, they inspired me strive to create stories as touching as hers. Her stories had meaning behind them, they felt as if they were more than just words on a page to me, even if I could not relate to anything she wrote about on a personal level. Creative writing is a challenging and daunting task for me. In my own writing, I excel when it comes to research papers, as my grade usually reflects. It is easier for me to write about facts and statistics, rather than create something of my own. The Norton Field Guide to Writing states, “Often your stance is affected by your genre: for example, lab reports require an objective, unemotional stance that emphasizes the content and minimizes the writer’s own attitudes”(Bullock et al. 13). This makes it difficult for me to write creatively at times because incorporating my own thoughts and feelings into papers is not something that comes easily to me, and a lot of that problem stems from my inspiration to write. I struggle when it comes to combining multiple writing styles into one style that is solely my…

The second key literary element is imagery. There was a lot of imagery in this poem. How Nikki describes the leaf at the end of the poem, and how it is "struggling . . . to lift itself into the wind and live" and how the birds are "living kin of dinosaurs think themselves invincible and pay no heed to the rolling wheels while they dine on an unlucky rabbit" I think the imagery really goes to show the detail in the poem and helps you imagine how the narrator thinks and feels when she almost hits the…

In addition, the two poets use different style to write the poems. In ¡§An Ancient Gesture¡¨, the Millay wants the reader to feel sorry for Penelope. She expressed the poem in a very calm tone, just liked telling a story. Also, the rhyme of the poem was easily located. The rhyming words were linked to emphasize the tone of the poem. ¡§Night-tight¡¨, ¡§year-tear¡¨, and ¡§implied-cried¡¨ were used to stress the depressing feeling of the characters. Alternatively, in ¡§The Sirens¡¨, Finkel uses enjambment in the poem because it alludes to the sirens who sang songs. Also, Finkel emphasized the allusion by using many personifications. ¡§Sea turn in his bed¡¨ and ¡§The wind took it, and he heard¡¨. He personified sea and wind because they are related to the sirens that were sea creatures. In…

Uses of literary devices are crucial in poems, as they express the poets thought more in depth and give their readers a better view about what the poets is trying to convey to them. In sonnet 29 the poet uses anaphors a lot for example “Pity me not because the light of day…Pity me not for the beauties passed…Pity me not the waning of the moon….” (Millay 153). The poet dose this to stress on the issue the poem is discussing like for example if you are trying to say that everything is green you could say, the green chair, the green mat, the green wall paper, the green slippers. It focuses the reader on what the poet want to say. Personifications are also used a lot in this sonnet, for example, “day no longer walks the sky”, “heart is slow to learn”, and “the swift mind beholds at every turn” (Millay153). The poet does this just to make the reader get a better view of what he is trying to say or express, for example instead of saying the sun was in the sky you could say it like the sun was smiling down on me. It just expresses the poet’s thoughts more effectively. In first love metaphors, similes and anaphor are used. For…

The poem is written in the first person which gives it a personal feel. The library into which Giovanni enters is described in detail. The heavy oak chairs and banker’s lights make me think of important things. Also the creaky floor makes me feel like the library is old. Old and important stuff also make me happy. I think I would also like to visit this library as the reader does while reading this poem.…

Imagery is dominant in this poem, especially after Angelou questions her oppressors. She gives the us images like “I walk like I’ve got oil wells /Pumping in my living room” and “Shoulders falling down like teardrops” and ” I dance like I’ve got diamonds/ At the meeting of my thighs.” There is also the repeating image of air and dust rising. Much of her imagery is conveyed through similes and metaphors. This usage of figurative languages gives us a very clear picture of what Angelou means and usually conveys a strong emotion. For example, when Angelou says “Shoulders falling down like teardrops,” we get an image of drooping shoulders (like the shape of a tear) and the…
