Neverland

I slowly come to my senses. I feel wet, hot, and sandy. I try to roll over to remove my face from its uncomfortable position on the beach, only to find my body paralyzed by some sort of incredible weight on my back.

After an uncertain amount of time, I feel the weight lifted and a familiar voice whisper in my ear, “troll.” An automatic grimace appears on my face, as I turn my glaring eyes toward Brendan.

“Shut up, Gill,” I croak, but then realize what this means, “Brendan! Oh my God, you’re alive!” I jump to my feet. My head starts spinning, and I black out again.

I wake up, this time sitting on the edge of a tropical

“We were starting to get…”

I didn’t let Bethy finish. “Taro! I found Taro, guys! Come on!” I lead them back to the clearing, grabbing one of the half-filled water bottles on the way. After two more weeks of only seeing the endless sea, we grow quite delirious. Our rations are becoming smaller and smaller as our food supply slowly dwindles, despite the conservation of the dry food and the mass of tropical fruit we packed. The lack of water is the worst. We take turns rowing in groups of two, using the oars we crudely sculpted from palm trees.

The fog settles around us as the sun slowly starts to rise on the morning of September 23rd. Brendan sits on his knees on the front left corner of the raft and mindlessly pushes and pulls the oar in and out of the water. I repeat his actions on the opposite side. Everyone else is sleeping, limbs strewn all over in precarious positions.

As the fog begins to clear, and the bright sun breaks through the clouds, Taro starts to wake up and stretch, and in doing so, accidentally pushes a sleeping Nick off the raft. Nick wakes up, disoriented, just as he rolls into the water. Taro jumps into save him, waking up Stef and Bethy with a splash. To our delighted surprise, Nick and Taro stand up laughing in the water, waist

NONE OF THEM KNEW THE COLOR OF THE SKY. Their eyes glanced level, and remained upon the waves that swept toward them. These waves were gray, except for the tops, which were white, and all the men knew the colors of the sea. The line between sky and water narrowed and widened, and fell and rose.A man likes to take a bath in a bigger area than this boat could provide. These waves were frightfully rapid and tall; and each boiling, white top was a problem in the small boat. The cook sat in the bottom, and looked with both eyes at the six inches of boat which separated him from the ocean. He had bared his fat arms as he worked to empty the water from the boat. Often he said, “God! That was a bad one.” As he remarked it, he always looked toward the east over the rough sea.…

A sudden coldness hit my face, as I carefully descended down the stairs of the store. The city of New York awaited me, like a painting drawn by the very hands of nature. The clouds glimmered as the sun hid behind the tall buildings. The Empire State Building stood majestically among the buildings, it’s point shone the brightest. From above, a pile of snow landed on my head, breaking the spell of the glamorous lights before my eyes. The next second, pain slashed through my arm, as the very heavy garbage bag dug into my skin, reminding my original objective, which was taking out the trash. I stepped down the last stair and into the white fluffy blanket that laid across the land.…
