We wanted to explore the landmarks that can be seen in Metro Manila to nourish our understanding and love for the course better. Our trips to the different landmarks were successful as we met our goal and we enjoyed all that we saw and we went through. History is a chronological record of events that have come to pass. For many of us the study of history and how individuals managed to live their lives in the old days has become unimaginable, especially in today’s technologically advanced society. It’s comical to witness the younger generation display a sense of awe at events that you and I experienced as normal everyday events, such things as turning the television channels manually, or making a phone call by using a pay phone, or even writing a letter to a love one and waiting up to a couple of weeks for a response. These insignificant events may not mean much to the new generations, but it means a lot to…

“The past reminds us of timeless human truths and allows for the perpetuation of cultural traditions that can be nourishing; it contains examples of mistakes to avoid, preserves the memory of alternative ways of doing things and is the basis for self-understanding.” This quote by Bettina Drew well-explains how history is important to us as human beings. History helps us know what happened years ago. How it relates to us? Well, it helps us learn lessons by going back to the mistakes of our ancestors and learning from them. The youth these days are fast-paced and do not care about history because typically, most kids think that history is just simply a compilation of events that happened before. Most people simply don’t care because as we all say, ‘past is past’ and we shouldn’t dwell on it anymore. What they don’t know is that, by knowing your history, you get the idea on what kind of things happen for someone or something to appear as it is now. You wouldn’t know who you are if you don’t know who your mother came from, now would…

Although our course is entitled “Vietnam & 20th Century Experience”, our course actually begins in the 19th century. I’ll admit I have never before questioned why we have a class such as U.S. History. As I plop into my seat and listen to lectures about so and so writing the document of such and such I consider it quite unmoving. But as I actually take the time to think about it, I realize history is so crucial to not just our country, but the world. Our history basically defines us, and gives us a sense of cohesiveness. When getting to know someone, most people share information about their pasts. Your own personal history makes you who you are today; from your first broken bone to your first child. Although not everyone experiences specific events of history first hand, they can still…

Though I may not always be conscious of the fact, history plays an important role in my everyday life. The very reason why I am writing this essay is directly related to my family history. For as long as I can remember, my parents have instilled within me the importance of getting an education. Since my youth, they have always stressed the importance of hard work and dedication. Had it not been for their influence, there is a chance I wouldn’t be attending college right now, and perhaps I would not have the same aspirations I have today. Most of the decisions I make in my everyday life are based on things I’ve learned or experienced firsthand. My interests, personality, and lifestyle revolve around my personal history. I am who I am because of who I was. History is important to me because I believe it has helped me grow and evolve into the person I am today. I have learned from my mistakes, and likewise gained wisdom from my accomplishments. To me, history means learning from the past to make the future better than it has ever been.…

History is one of the most underappreciated subjects included in a modern education. Many students regard history as a useless subject that their school requires for some reason. What’s the point of learning about dead people and what they did, when you can learn about something that will be relevant to the present and the future? New information is always expanding the field of science, and english is constantly being perfected like a diamond being polished. These subjects, vital for future education and careers, are all equally important to learn, and are what continue to push humanity upward and onward. But history… History tells us who we were, where this world that exists today came from. Although many cynics protest that to dwell on the past rather than looking to the future is a waste of time and effort, any historian can tell just the opposite - that history gives humanity identity, wisdom, tradition, technology, and culture.…

Since Intramuros, Manila was designated as a world heritage site in 1995 by UNESCO; this historical place had no hotel facility built to international standards. Thus, deciding on the eventual use of the former Dona Concepcion Blanco Licaros Building offer it was sold to the Lyceum of the Philippines University – LPU in 2006 was not difficult. A hotel that would serve countless tourist who come to Intramuros on a daily basis, not to mention the hospitality requirements of the many establishment within its walls and surrounding environs while at the same time serving as a venue for the OJT needs of its hospitality and culinary students, was the logical and best use for the building.…
