Neil Perry: Dead Poet's Society
Neil Perry shows us what it means to be a leader in the film Dead Poets Society he is the person reviving and rejuvenating the society, though shows us that an outward appearance is not all that there is. In the near beginning when he first finds out about the dead poets society from asking his teacher, he instantly wants to start it again to open his and other's minds this begins his distinction as a leader. Perry brought people like Todd Anderson a shy and nonvocal person into the “club” to try and bring him into becoming a more outgoing person with him and his teacher Perry helped Todd to become more free thinking. Though with this Neil becomes more outgoing himself even involving himself in a play though against his father's wishes. His own sense of nonconformity and reluctance to only follow orders is what shows him to be a great leader in contrast to the great leaders of WW2 such as Patton, Rommel, MacArthur, and Marshall all show their breaking of the conformity of leadership and …show more content…
His tenacity to try and make life his, is what drove him and what maintained his outward appearance. His father, though forcing him to do as he says creates turmoil inside Neil leading to a collapse of his hope. This creates a very finite array of solutions which pushes him to commit suicide as an easy way, to get away from his father. The film Dead Poets Society Neil express’ the fundamental ideals and actions of what it means to be a leader. Challenging himself and his friends to push limits and change their lives. While doing this he contradicts his father and as such brings his father's consequences which ends up destroying his will and confidence leading to his suicide. With all the attributes of a leader and the actions of one he himself was still weak in mind and could not have been seeing for the happy face he had

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

To most people a dream is just a part of the imagination, of course it would be ideal for it to come true, but the average person can see the difference from a dream to reality. The average person knows not to trust people blindly, knows to do what is best for them, they understand that occasionally one must put their dreams aside for it will not work with the world around them, they understand how to adjust their dream to reality. Of course this is just the average person. The characters Finny and Neil are both dreamers and idealists and were therefore destined to die for they could not live in a world where dreams are only dreams and reality includes hate, jealousy and practicalists. Finny was unable to live a life where his best friend hated him. Neil was in able of living a life in military school. Both could only live the dream.…

“Whose canon is it anyway?” is an article written by Bethan Marshall. In the article, Marshall analyzes a review by Tom Paulin of a book by Anthony Julius about the anti-Semitism and literary works of T. S. Elliot. Despite being a well-known anti-Semite, Elliot and his poetry were studied in schools around the world. Therefore, by questioning his beliefs, we also question our own culture because Elliot’s works are closely related to its foundation. So, Elliot poses the question: Is culture something we can control or deliberately influence? In 1993, the head of the National Curriculum Council, David Pascall, changed the curriculum in an effort to try and answer Elliot’s question. Five years earlier, Brian Cox had tried to implement a similar kind of curriculum as Pascall but did not follow through with it despite feeling the need for a cultural analysis. Edward Said describes culture as being something inevitable that grows on the individual and automatically makes them a little xenophobic. Dr. Nicholas Tate brought up how our culture is based on our interest and the environment in which we are placed in. He believes that someone can be multicultural as it is part of what makes the person core culture. Yet, by trying to alter the culture, we are losing the traditional values that English literature was built on. For example, the works by Elliot that was been studied for decades are the roots for questions about culture, identity and power that are trying to be preserved.…

According to Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as “the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group.” In the movie, there are two main leaders’ day display leadership roles. The first is space commander Jim Lovell and Houston Command Control Center commander Gene Cranz. Each of them will face enormous challenges and will have to work through them. During the chaos, Gene tells the crew “Failure is not an option.” No matter how long or toke, they were going to bring the crew home safely. The first type of leadership that will be discussed is the trait theory of leadership. This type of leadership has been proclaimed obsolete by itself in determining leadership ability. According to Bass(2008) this type of leadership began to lose ground in the 1940 's. This leadership theory has been making a comeback in the last few years. According to Kirkpatrick and Locke(1991) leaders possess certain core traits that are noted in successful leaders. It has been made rather clear that great leaders are different than other people and feature different traits. The teacher in this movie was a prime example of this. This leader demonstrated self-confidence, stamina, motivation, courage, skills, and excellent performance in his role as the leader of these students. When the going got tough, he got even tougher and retained a stamina and will that went beyond what other people would tolerate. Many before him had quit and yet he refused to succumb to the same fate.…

This Freshman Seminar displayed the power of leadership in all of its forms. There are many types of leadership skills and characteristics; however, they all are encompassed by a set of core values one must follow to be a leader. We explored what could be called the ten commandments of leadership during class discussion and how they applied to a series of movies including Apollo 13, Courage Under Fire, Norma Rae, and Cry Freedom. In each movie, every character showed a different type of leadership, rather it be negative or positive. In this seminar we also distinguished between transactional and transformational leadership. In this research paper I will examine each film by identifying the concepts of leadership found within them, if they demonstrate transactional or transformational leadership, and how they relate to my personal experiences.…

Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.…

The highly rated film Dead Poets Society, directed by Peter Weir has explored the impact of parents’ high demands for children. Through the two protagonists of the film, the audience might well be inclined to see that the predetermined values from parents can have a negative impact on children. Constant parental pressure to fulfil their vision of success limits their children’s abilities, change and weakens their personality, and impact their relationship with others.…

Today was the day where I got to live my dream of acting. It was a magnificent feeling being on that stage and saying those lines and hearing the audience applause for me. Then seeing my father in the audience gave me hope that my dream could come true for the future. So to ensure that happened, I tried harder to make everything perfect and showed how passionate I am on stage to my father. I thought the applause for me from the audience would make my father realize this could be my profession and that people actually like me but this had no effect on him. As soon as I was done with the play, my father came and took me to the car. He didn’t even give me a chance to thank my cast members and to allow people to tell me how I did or whether they liked the play. He came and told me to come with him. I could see the angry in his eyes and then I knew that all that on the stage meant nothing to him. All that he took in account was that I disobeyed him by coming here. At that moment I could see my dream shattering in front of me and I couldn’t do anything to stop it. I couldn’t understand that why it was so hard for my father to understand what I wanted to do.…
