NEGATIVE SIDE OF TATTOOS-- informative speech outline
Topic: Presentation about Ideas

Organization: Topical

Specific Purpose: I would like my audience to understand three negative effects of getting tattoos.

INTRODUCTION

I. Attention Getter: Thirty years ago the percentage of people with tattoos was one percent. Today that number has increased to one in four.

II. Relevance: The art of tattoos can be dated as far back to 2000 B.C. Back then tattooing was used for such things as rituals or for cultural purposes. Today it is popular for expressing oneself and portraying individuality.

III. Credibility: As a fan of individuality, I've gone through the excitement and pain of getting a tattoo. Getting a tattoo is becoming more and more popular amongst college students.

IV. Thesis: Like most others I've thought little about the negative effects a tattoo can have. The unfortunate side to tattooing is most of the time out-shined by the excitement of getting one. Negative products include health risks, society rejection and tattoo removal.

BODY

I. When getting a tattoo, you are risking your health. Major health problems have resulted from tattoos. This can be caused by dirty needles and equipment or simply the body's rejection or allergic reaction to the tattoo.

A. When it comes to sanitation of the needles being used to tattoo, most people have been lucky. Those who haven't most likely resulted in acquiring such diseases as impetigo, cellulitis, herpes simplex and even viral warts. The most popular amongst the health risks would be Hepatitis C. This deadly disease can be spread by dirty needles or shared needles. The virus affects the liver, is incurable and has no vaccine. In December of 2003 a Texas Jury awarded a woman $551,600 after she learned she became ill with the disease. Her only risk factor was a tattoo she'd gotten. The percentage of hepatitis C infections accounted for more than twice as many

The effects of them are only obvious; one will have them, generally, for the rest of their life. Most piercings can close completely when taken out later. Tattoos, on the other hand hold a much greater promise of permanence. They can be laser treated off; however it is both painful and costly, usually at least double of the tattoo itself. In support of Martin’s reasoning, the tattoo I am having laser treated is my smallest one and was done spur of the moment. There was no thought or consideration, as it was more of a getting a tattoo for the sake of getting a…

Let’s start by picking your brain for a moment. If I were to ask you what your opinions were towards tattooing, what would your answer be? You may be surprised to know that within our society today, regardless of what your answer was, we could assume that people are divided based on each alternating view of tattoos. Some bring a more stereotypical view in that tattoos may pose a negative factor when trying to land that perfect job. Perhaps that it may symbolize that they are part of a gang, a “biker” if you will, maybe a criminal or part of a lower class in society? (Proehl 2004) Tattooing may also instill fear…

The most advanced ancient tattoos were seen in Ancient Japanese culture. Tattoos designs have been “ornamental, ritual, or identity oriented in nature” or they would use Japanese myths and legends for inspiration. Even though tattoos were so popular it doesn’t mean that they were accepted as norms. In Japan, people with tattoos had to have their own bathhouses, brothels, and bars…
