Narrative Essay On Basketball
The day I was looking forward to had finally arrived: Basketball tryouts. I wasn’t the most talented, but I knew I could contribute to the team as a defensive stopper, using my size to my advantage. While the rest of the fellow middle schoolers struggled to hit layups and dribble the ball, I showed slightly more skill than everyone else. I made the B team that year as the team captain and leader. We didn’t win a game all season long, but that didn’t stop my love of the game; in fact, that is when it all began. I played every year up until my senior year, and now I’m the Varsity manager by my own power. Over the years, I found myself loving to play the game, but I now know my real calling card is to analyze the game. Dirk Nowitzki has the ball in the post, turned and saw the defender right in his grill. He turns and shoots his patented one-footed fadeaway. …show more content…
If there was a basketball history class at my high school, I would ace it every year and it would be by far my favorite class. I could see it now: the teacher asking “Who’s the Nets’ all-time leading scorer?” Everyone says “Vince Carter” or “Julius Erving.” I say “Buck Williams” to the amazement of my peers . That’s what I want to do when I grow up: analyze and study the game of basketball, preferably as a broadcaster. I see guys like Charles Barkley, Jeff Van Gundy, and Kevin Harlan, among others, as intelligent minds of the NBA, providing great analysis and interesting points and opinions. Ultimately, I would like to be on an NBA talk show, like the TNT phenomenon Inside The NBA doing not only what I love but what I am passionate about as well. That’s what everyone should look for in a career: no matter if it’s nursing, swimming, teaching, you name it. If it makes you happy, do it, and you never know how it can change your life. For me, that one thing is basketball and I hope it will change my

It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. “Joe,” my father hollered up the stairs, “it’s for you. It’s Jackie, and she sounds upset.” As I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was not happy. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice and quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Jackie.…

As a fourth grader, being told that “winning isn’t everything” was a little hard to believe. Only recently do I realize how true this statement is and how important it is to learn this. I believe that in playing sports, what is most important is improving oneself, working as a team, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

There was a general interest meeting for anyone who wanted to play on the school team. I was confident I could return to my geeky ways if there were no other beginners on the team. As I nervously walked into the gym, it seemed like every kid on the court was born with a basketball in his hand. I stood on the sideline and tried to look somewhat coordinated by bouncing an occasional dribble. I watched in awe as kids came up the court and effortlessly hit shot after shot. They could drive to the hoop with ease and made me feel like I was born with two left feet with their fancy dribble moves. The coach walked out of his office and announced to the group that basketball tryouts would be in November. It was already September, and it would take a miracle worker to bring me to the skill level I needed to make the team. I was short and had never touched a basketball in my life. What was I doing here? The mountain I anticipated was in reality Mt. Everest. I could never see myself in a million years having what it takes to be good at basketball. But I kept hearing soft whispers inside my mind to just try it. Maybe it was because it was a new school year and a new beginning. Maybe it was because I had friends who lived and breathed basketball. Whatever the reason, I signed up for…

I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…
